I am currently working as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor, as part of the apprenticeship scheme with Mace, I rotate between different sectors of the business. My daily tasks often include measuring works (using measuring software)and pricing the works accordingly. These exercises are usually the result of a client change, which are instructed during meetings I attend.
As well as studying Quantity Surveying at University from an academic perspective, Mace has helped my skills develop from an occupational perspective too. For instance, Mace has implemented Cost Planning and Cost Reporting software, which is something I have received training for and used on my project on a daily basis. Not to mention, Mace provides a well structured apprentice training programme as well as further training available to all staff.
The programme is highly enjoyable, as my day to day tasks are extremely varied. Furthermore, my team are always willing to assist me and improve my understanding of the tasks I'm undertaking. Mace also have a very positive company culture in terms of keeping staff morale high, as they organize plenty of social events in order for you to get better acquainted with your colleagues.
I do feel valued by Mace as receive frequent feedback from my line manager and there are also organized progress meetings with members of the Emerging Talent team at Mace. This provides me with a good indication of how I am getting on and that the work that I do is appreciated. Mace also give me responsibility on live projects which is invaluable and vital to my personal development.
The programme has been very well organized, with insightful training sessions with internal and guest lecturers. The regular progress meetings mean there is always support in place if I feel I'm not receiving the relevant experience. There is also a mentoring scheme in place which is helpful as it provides me with the opportunity to speak to a senior figure in the business in a more casual environment.
I have found the training provider has been incredibly helpful in teaching and assessing the course given that we are only part-time students. Lecturers do make themselves available to take queries you have regarding the work. The course content itself is taught in an engaging manner as the lectures are often interactive.
Mace provides an incredible amount of support. My manager regularly meets me to set and discuss work and is always willing to help with queries I may have regarding the tasks that have been set. Furthermore, I have a mentor who is always there for a second opinion and has helped me develop new skills and visit new construction sites. HR also closely monitor the experience we are getting and whether it is beneficial for our careers.
Given, the location of the apprenticeship scheme, living cost, travel costs and general daily costs are high. Whilst Mace did initially provide a competitive starting salary, the increase hasn't been significant given the structured/fixed pay rises. The salary isn't enough to support London living.
Yes, Mace provide plenty of opportunities outside of work, which help in building a rapport with your team. There are also End of Year awards that are in place to acknowledge our achievements each year. Mace also provide the opportunity to take part in an annual volunteering day where you could helping a local community or charity.
