Engineering Apprentice Review

On a day to day basis I carry out a range of tasks; mechanical fitting, electrical assembly testing, inspecting Etc. I am constantly interacting with the workforce as it is a team environment as appose to completing individual work. my responsibilities as an apprentice are to ensure I am punctual, enthusiastic and display evidence of understanding through my job write-ups.

I am currently working towards a HNC, I have undertaken on the job training on the use of various pieces of manufacturing and test equipment and tooling. In addition I have completed 1 weeks personal development programme and am set to complete a further week this year. I have become more confident in presenting my ideas and opinions, in both groups and one to one situations. I have developed my mechanical fitting ability and have become fluent in the use of mechanical fitting tools.

The team environment at MBDA is great, everybody is willing to help each other and people have a lot of time for apprentices in particular. The work that I complete is interesting and can be complex at times which is always good as I want to be challenged. My programme has definitely exceeded my initial expectations.

The internal recognition of apprentices at MBDA is controlled by how much you get involved with various events and your behaviour in work. Showing an enthusiastic and willing attitude will show that you are interested and enjoy working at MBDA. There are many opportunities for external recognition through events and awards.

My induction and training was organised and was completed with no problems. We have lacked support, however changes have been made to improve this. In terms of studying again there are several concerns but these are being dealt with.

We receive a small amount of support from our training provider but have people who support us at our company. Other than this we only receive guidance whilst in attendance and over emails. Overall I would say that I enjoy it 60% of the time.

We receive much more support from onsite managers and engineers within MBDA. This is mostly in relation to our college work. The general attitude seems to be that if we show willing and put the time in then we will be given as much support as required in return.

My salary meets all of my living and travel costs with leftover money to save and spend on social activities.

There are many events that take place outside of work; awards evenings, career events, volunteering, fundraising Etc. I have taken part in all listed and have enjoyed them all.

So far I have enjoyed my time at MBDA and have felt the benefits of working in a company that values apprenticeships. I have had many opportunities throughout my short time here and look forward to many more. In addition the company values apprentices and this is represented in how you are involved in many activities and events.

Application: Make sure that you show you are enthusiastic and interested in mechanical/electrical engineering. Also make sure you have studied the appropriate subjects and completing a work experience placement at MBDA looks great. Interviews/Assessment: You will be questioned on your applications and the company and will take part in a team task which is an opportunity for you to show your teamwork skills. Finally ensure you apply for the correct role; Operations or Engineering. Operations is hands-on work, whereas Engineering is a more technical/support role.
