So I am a Software Engineer - we solve problems and create solutions for clients.
We are sent on an 8 week intensive course at the start of our apprenticeship - we learn Java, Python, Ruby, SQL, PL/SQL, HTML and CSS - this initial training sets us up for the working world. This period is called ALE (accelerated learning environment) you and your cohort of other apprentices live on campus at Aston University.
I really enjoy my Degree Apprenticeship. You are working, gaining relevant experience, getting paid and completing a degree. It's such a great opportunity to take and succeed in. Everyday at work you're learning and it's all applicable to your degree. Everyone at the company is super friendly and it's a nice environment and culture to be part of.
I felt valued from the first day I worked in the office during my week in business as part as ALE. I was put on a week long sprint, I explained that I was new to the company with not much technical background and everyone was so welcoming and understanding.
The Degree Apprentice Programme is well structured and organized - training during the Accelerate Learning Environment was very sufficient and the lecturers were very good and explained things very well, they provided great support across the 8 weeks. Mentor system is good, you can talk to another Degree Apprentice and ask any questions, as they've been in your shoes before.
We have on-campus teaching days scheduled for throughout the year. This is great to see people at university face-to-face and catch up with other apprentices. We have webinars (online seminars) in which we learn content - these are recorded so you are able to refer back to at any time.
Employees and managers support the Degree Apprenticeship wholly. We are allocated study days throughout the year for us to study for our exams or meet our skills coach within the company building. They support you wherever they can, even in regards to the direction of your career and providing more learning resources.
I had a full time job before I started the Degree Apprenticeship - so I took a pay cut. However, I realize that in the long term this would be worth my while especially as the company are paying for my degree in Digital and Technology Solutions. But for students joining straight from college or sixth-form, the salary is more than enough.
Yes
Very good company to work for and gives you the perfect step up into the digital working world. As an apprentice you are supported from day 1 and you start your career. Cap is a very ethical company and very encouraging especially to girls in tech. Abide by their 7 key values: Boldness, fun, trust, freedom, modesty, team spirit and honesty.
When applying to Cap, I would just say to be yourself. Don't be anxious or overthink - if you don't get the job the first time around, you can always re-apply. The application process is relatively long, but it's worth it all in the end. You'll meet many great individuals in the process.
