Higher Operations Apprentice Review

My job title is Higher Operations Engineering Apprentice. I complete 3 month placements across the company and spend time in every section of the business. I do a mixture of assembly, test, inspection and design within my 4 years and work on a vast variety of projects. As an apprentice, I am given quite a lot of responsibility regarding the pathway of my career. I have a huge amount of opportunities to network both across the company and with representatives of other companies. I work along side senior engineers to gain the most knowledge and insight to the projects being worked on.

Since starting at MBDA, I have acquired a vast amount of qualifications. I am now a trained IPC Specialist to class 3, I have completed a Dynamic Cabling Course, I have gained a qualification in ICT, and completed my Equality and Diversity training, ESD training and Health and Safety training. I am also completing an NVQ Level 2 and 3, as well as a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with prospects of completing a HNC and HND in Electrical and Electronic Engineering

I absolutely love my programme. I am in a company with a lovely culture, where everyone is so friendly. In the 6 months I have been here so far, I haven't met anyone that isn't kind and respectful. Even as an apprentice, I get treated with the same amount of respect as a senior principle engineer. I am met with endless opportunities to progress my career and I'm looking forward to what I have to come.

Very organised. Within my first week, I was provided with a timetable of where and when my placements are for the next four years. I have a structured study programme and options for further education after my placement

I feel I have a strong support network from my HR manager, team leaders and Apprentice management. The weeks before starting I was paired with a 'buddy' (a current apprentice) and they were available to ask questions or go to with any issues.

I have a monthly review with my HR manager and regular catch ups with my team leader and Learning and Development Officer. If I ever have any issues, I can quite happily and easily speak to one of them to resolve any problems

My salary is very competitive with performance reviews that determine my annual pay rise. At the end of my 4 years, I will come out on a very healthy salary which is more than likely to increase depending on which area of the business I go into.

There are an endless amount of opportunities both internally and externally. A key aspect of the apprenticeship is networking and working within the public and company community. Apprentices are always encouraged to take part in as many activities as possible.

To be able to work for a company which provides you with so many options and opportunities is incredibly exciting and will stand you in good stead for my future career. Not only that, but the goods we provide is something out of the ordinary, so people are more interested in your job. Since working for MBDA, I have found my confidence has improved greatly and I'm more enthusiastic.

Take part in as many extra-curricular activities as possible. D of E, NCS, volunteering, clubs, etc.. Think outside the box. Produce something physical to show them, e.g. electronics kits, model engines, engineering builds done at school etc.. Produce a portfolio, any coursework that could relate to the job, qualifications, certificates, etc.. Be confident. One of the key aspects here at MBDA is personality. Confidence and enthusiasm is very important. Create contact with members of HR. Don't be afraid to email or phone up regarding any queries during the application process. They're there to help you! Speak to people you may know that work there. They can offer you advice.
