As a Laboratory Science Apprentice in the Biopharm Cell Line Process Development group, my role is heavily biology oriented. My day-to-day tasks are diverse, as my job is split between practical lab work and theoretical office work. I'm mostly involved in mammalian cell culture, molecular biology techniques such as transformations and molecular cytogenetics work exploring new technologies and analysis software. My office work involves experimental design, optimisation and project planning. I work independently sometimes and with members of my team at other times - usually small groups. It can be a lot to juggle at times!
My practical skills have improved significantly, as well as my confidence to work independently. I have discussed and presented my work in team meetings, where I have had to think critically and analytically in order to give and receive feedback. I commit one working day a week to studying for my Foundation Degree in Applied Bioscience Technology with the University of Kent. I have become more self-motivated, developed a sense of curiosity and have demonstrated both my dependability and patience.
I always look forward to my day at work! The company culture is based on a set of values which drive all of our critical decisions, so we are all like-minded individuals working together for the benefit of the patients. Every day is different and unpredictable but the support I receive from my team is exceptional.
My value to the team is not based on my qualifications or my position within the company, so my ideas are appreciated and I am encouraged to ask as many questions as possible. I have a great relationship with my manager and I appreciate their constructive feedback on my performance. I'm also credited for my involvement in key projects.
My studying is mostly organised by my university, which provides online support as well as regular face-to-face meetings to check my progress. I never worry about getting stuck on something because there is always someone willing to help me succeed in my degree. Science requires some flexibility as you cannot fully organise everything - you must be prepared for mistakes and problems to arise.
My first port of call is usually the module leader, as they are an expert in that field so they can offer you guidance with assignments and exam preparation, or any general misunderstandings that need addressing. Being a distance learner means that a lot of my support is over the internet, so it's not always instant and communication can be difficult. Overall, my tutors are friendly and supportive.
I cannot fault the support I receive from both my manager and members of my team, as well as my mentor. People take the time to listen to you and commit to helping you with any task - no matter how big or small. There is always someone around if you have a problem that you don't know how to solve.
My pay matches the hard work I put in.
There is a gym on site with a variety of classes you can attend for a discounted price. There is no shortage of clubs and social events to get involved in, including team building exercises and personal development opportunities. We are encouraged to get involved in as much as possible to truly make the most of our time here.
