My job title was Laboratory Apprentice, and I had the opportunity to work in the labs with experienced scientists on real programs and conduct my own experiments. I was invited to scientific meetings and was able to have a real influence on what I worked on. My daily role was varied and it was a very rare occasion that I had nothing to do!
As part of my apprenticeship, I completed a FDSc in Applied Bioscience Technology with Medway School of Pharmacy. In addition, at work I learned how to perform complex experiments and design my own protocols, how to analyse complex data and use visualization software, basic statistical principles and an understanding of the ethical implications of the work I perform.
Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed my apprenticeship and feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to partake. Work is rewarding and fulfilling. The teams I have been in have been patient and supportive during my learning and gradual improvement. The company as a whole seems committed to doing the right thing, which makes me feel good about my work. The pay and benefits are also reasonably good.
The company and my managers have regularly made me feel recognized and appreciated. Praise is encouraged and a 'thank you' board allows anyone to write a note thanking each other for favors and help. Additionally, big pieces of work or effort can be rewarded by cash recognition rewards.
My programme began slightly disorganized as I was one of the first apprentices in the department, however now it is way better and apprentices that start now are looked after and well organized by HR and the university. Regardless, my manager gave me great support and helped me to plan my work.
Support was available by email, where the university got back to us usually within a week. Our university supervisor visited site two times a year, which was a good opportunity to catch up and discuss progress. Since my completion of the scheme, support has extended to live chat and quicker response times from the university.
My employer was always supportive of my studies. From giving me extra study time when required, to ensuring mentoring and guidance was available, I always felt looked after and that people were on my side. Problems were resolved quickly and I felt like I could discuss anything with my manager.
Salary is pretty good, and I received regular pay rises to track my improving performance and experience. In addition an annual bonus was well received!
The company has an apprentice network called NxtGen, which is focused on apprentice networking. This organises social events and get togethers for apprentices to mix and feel more a part of the company. Additionally, the department organises occasional team building and social events. On site there is a well equipped gym with reasonable monthly subscription.

GSK has enabled me to become qualified and offered me great opportunities to grow and become a better scientist, and has helped me to gain an enjoyable and satisfying career.
For the interview, ensure you research a bit about the company as this will show you are passionate about science. Make sure your values are aligned with the company too, as GSK tends to value integrity and good will over monetary or financial gain.
