  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Senior Network Technician Apprenticeship - my day-to-day role involves reviewing works completed by contractors and putting that feedback into spreadsheets. I also have to liaise with customers who may have any concerns about work being carried out or have problems with their sewers in which we have to make repairs.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I greatly enjoy my role, the work I do keeps me busy and there are a wide variety of jobs I can do. I work in a great team of people who are all willing to share their knowledge and help me progress. This has exceeded my expectations on the role, although I didn't really know what to expect coming into this role as I was unfamiliar with it.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Severn Trent?
  • I feel like Severn Trent value their apprentices highly and are making a big effort to ensure that we all enjoy our time here. My manager is very supportive and seems very interested in making me and the other apprentices in the team as good as we can be at our jobs. The more time is spend here I am getting involved in more projects which give me a sense of importance to the team and company as a whole

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The induction carried out by Severn Trent was good and it had a good structure to it. Although we had four weeks at EEF college as another induction, this felt really dragged out and at points a waste of time. I enjoy the college course and fell like it's the right amount of work and doesn't have a negative effect on our work performance due to being to much work

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • At the start it felt like there was not to much support from the college but that has improved, we have a meeting to review our apprenticeship every 8 weeks to make sure that we are on track. We have also fully discussed the NVQ and what it requires so that we can complete it to the best standard

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have a lot of support from my mentor, he is more than happy to give me help and further my knowledge. There is also a great network of people that you can receive guidance from and all the apprentices are a great support to one another and we have made good working relationships that we can use going through the apprenticeship

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary more than meets my costs of living and allows me to enjoy a good social life. The company more than covers my travel costs which allows me to use this money to keep my car running well and on the road which is essential to my job. The location of my office is also great and doesn't require me to travel a long distance

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are numerous company events and volunteering days that Severn Trent allow us to get involved in. WE spent a day clearing a wooded area as a team which allowed us a nice change from the normal days work as well as allowing the opportunity to colleagues who you might not get to speak to and build good working relationships.
