Shadowing other people who are in the role I will be in once I finish my apprenticeship along with performing tasks on spreadsheets and the company's own software to update data and ensure audits and other things are kept up to date.
I have learned about construction in my college course (1 day per week) along with a lot of new information about the waste water side of Severn Trent, such as the infrastructure. I have also learned a lot about the software used to perform tasks related to waste water.
I enjoy working with all the people I have met at Severn Trent as there is a real feeling of community and the everyone is extremely approachable. I have felt the support given is fantastic and the safety culture ensure you feel genuinely cared for.
My manager often talks to me about how I am getting on and within the office there is often conversation about work which I can get involved with. This makes me feel valued as part of the team. Recent health issues have highlighted the support Severn Trent offer.
The programme I am on is fairly new and yet the training has all been arranged outstandingly. I am given all the support I could ask for and my other colleagues in the role I am going into are very insightful and understanding.
I am able to email my training provider about queries and tutor questions whenever and I can ask whenever I attend college once per week if I have any questions. The lessons are well planned out and offer good interaction for the entire class.
I am able to contact my manager whenever I would like and have been assigned a mentor who performs the role I am training for. My mentor is always able to help when I have trouble with any issue and points me in the right direction if I have any queries at all.
I have found the apprentice wage more than ample and I am offered fuel allowance along with other expenses if I have to stay away for training or anything else work related. Cannot fault Severn Trent for this at all.
Severn Trent offers volunteering days, along with team days such as walks and hikes for charity to build up the team. I have taken part in a week team building in the Lake District when I first joined which was a great way to become comfortable with other apprentices.
Yes
Severn Trent are an outstanding company with a focus on safety and customer relation. You are made to feel part of the team as soon as you join and everyone is so welcoming and willing to help. The benefits of working at Severn Trent (Pension, Shares, etc.) are all incredible and in the long run I can definitely see it being the type of company you could easily develop a career within.
Take your time to prepare for the interview and assessment day as it is quite a lengthy process. The application can take a while but this shouldn't discourage you as it is set up in a logical way and if you read everything fully it is easy to understand. I would like to have been told about the benefits of an apprentice scheme at Severn Trent and the fact that age is less of an issue as I had previously thought as I thought it was limited to 16 - 18 year olds.
