Technical consultant within the cybersecurity space. I deploy a database monitoring tool to some of the worlds biggest banks to monitor privileged access amongst the customer's database. It's a customer facing role with a lot of responsibility. I've been doing it for 2 years now and I plan to continue growing my skills within the data security space
I joined IBM having very little technical knowledge. I've since developed myself into a technical consultant specialising in database monitoring. Apart from these technical skills I've also been able to build my confidence in customer situations. I would never expect to be doing the work I am when I started the apprenticeship scheme
The programme is perfect for my learning ways. I've always learnt better by doing and IBM offers a great balance between on the job and off the job training, allowing us to learn new skills and put them straight into practice. The responsibility you're given as soon as you join is also a novelty
Apprentices are treated identically to other staff. At no point are you de-valued in the work you do. Yes, there are times that more experience and knowledge of work are needed, but alternative options are provided such as shadowing or small involvement. I've always felt valued and given enough responsibility to feel "worthwhile"
Very well organised, you're progressed into the business once you have passed the apprenticeship and the scheme will do all they can to find you a suitable role. You're supported throughout the apprenticeship to ensure that you feel comfortable. You're given a 2 week induction when you first join which gives you a great introduction into IBM.
I have mentors of senior IBMers that assist me in my role.
One of the best parts of IBM is the support network you gain. IBM has thousands of employee's worldwide, should I have an issue with something or not understand a certain part of my role then I am only a phone call away from finding the information I need, something that I have exercised many a time in my current role
Yes it does.
Most definitely, we are always encouraged to take part in giveback opportunities to help communities or other initiatives outside of our role. This grows our eminence within the company and also improves our personal skills. I've been involved with collaboration days with other companies' apprentices to gain insights into how their schemes works differently to ours.
Yes
IBM has grown me as a person in more ways than I had imagined. The experience I have gained over the last four years will lead me in good stead for the rest of my career. The responsibility and learning opportunities that IBM provides is excellent, I'd advise anyone to make the most of it.
Go for it!! There are hundreds of different roles available at IBM to try and see what you enjoy.
