I am an engineering technician apprentice currently working on the soft furnishings. I am assisting an engineer in completing the interior design project. We work closely with our team and the customer to produce a high quality product. My job involves me going onto other ships and analysing the interior to see how we can improve for comfort.
I have learnt many new skills since starting which include CAD - how to draw and interpret engineering drawings. I have also developed on many basic skills from communicating and organising to computing. I have already completed a HNC and I am working towards completing another HNC and a HND. When I am required to learn something new I am sent on training courses which also progresses my skills and learning.
I enjoy my work on a day to day basis, I am always given an interesting task to do and will learn something new every day. I work with a good team who are keen to help me, but who also understand I am still learning and can make mistakes. Overall the programme has exceeded my expectations in means of training and support.
I feel a very valued member of the company, I get a lot of appreciation and support from managers, there is always award ceremonies to recognise apprentices and a lot of opportunities made available to us to help us become successful. I feel very involved with the current work project and being trusted to complete important tasks makes me feel valued.
The induction to the programme was good; I got a lot of information about what qualifications I will come out with as well as the opportunities available after I am time severed. The programme overall is great, offering a lot of support and training, with great learning/teaching in order for me to get my qualifications. In work I move around the company in placements which allows me to see where I can go once I have completed my apprenticeship
I receive good support from my training officer, with 12 week reviews in place to see how I am getting on, what I’m good at and where I need improvements. I will get the support I need in order to improve for the next review. We are constantly pushed to do our best.
My manager supports me a lot by always checking on me and how I’m doing with the tasks I am set, if I ever need any help they are willing to put aside time and support me. They make sure I feel as part of the team and will help me to work to a high standard
My salary is great for meeting cost. There is financial advisors within the company to help anyone who may be struggling
There are many opportunities made available to me in work, from STEM work where you work with younger people to encourage them into things like engineering to company events, such as awards/dinners. There is always outward bound weeks organised for every apprentice and graduate for team building and getting to know one another.

BAE Systems is a great company to work for, with a high competitive salary and constant support, learning and training made available. It’s a good company to earn while you learn with lots of different career opportunities.
Work on the application process over time, constantly updating it with all the information about yourself. Be confident in the interview, research the company before hand so you know about the most up to date projects. Work with everyone on the assessment day, make friends and be yourself.
