I am an Engineering Technician Apprentice. I currently work in the Electrical Engineering team where I commonly update cable diagrams which will be sent to the CAD offices. A lot of it is a case of working it out for myself which I enjoy as it gives me freedom for my own development.
I have obtained a HNC in Engineering Systems and a SVQ level 2 thus far. I will also be looking to obtain a HNC in Electrical Engineering as well in the summer. I have gained/developed skills in Microsoft Word and Excel along with AutoCAD which I frequently use for my daily activities. I have also gained a large amount of confidence as I feel like part of the team, whatever team I go into
I enjoy it as most teams I go into have fully qualified Engineers that were formally apprentices so they know what I will be experiencing, good/bad. I am given a lot of freedom with my own development as I can negotiate a month extra in one of my many placements I have to go to if I feel that I can still learn new things.
I feel valued to an extent but there are sometimes where I feel that I could offer a slight bit more to the team as I progress towards the end of my placement where I am more aware of systems and methods used to complete tasks.
I would say that it is very well structured as I have placements already set out for me to go to. I also have a day release in college in which will allow me to gain 2 HNC's and a HND.
The training I receive from my college is fantastic. They are well aware of making sure that we are fully and properly trained in order for my apprentice group to be successful engineers. They also went the extra mile to make sure that we were deemed "competent" in our practical activities that were in place for our SVQ level 2.
I would say that I could go to my training officer for any issues as he will always take them seriously whether it be in working life or personal issues. We also carry out reviews every 3 months to make sure I am performing and to also see where I could improve if possible.
I would say that my salary meets my monthly costs I am able to travel, pay car payments, in amongst other things comfortably.
