A a rail automation engineering higher appretntice, I contribute towards active projects running in the business. I may be involved in any step of the product development life cycle (Requirements, Design, Implementation, Testing, Maintenance) and ensure that my work is completed to a high standard. Tasks include but are not limited to developing new software, creating diagrams & designs, researching new technologies, testing equipment, and comissioning infrasturce & equipment. As part of my apprenticeship, I am completeting an HNC in Electronic Engineering and a PEO in ELectrical Installation.
As part of my appretniceship I have completed a PEO in Electrical Installation which enables me to install electrical wiring in a building. I have vastly developed my software development skills such as C# and Web technologies. I have been on numerous training courses concerning public speaking, working on the railway, developing personal networks, having succesful meetings and more.
I enjoy my apprenticeship as it gives me a headstart in my career. At first I was unsure if I had made the right decision but after almost two years I can safely say it was the best choice. The company works well and there is a great atmosphere in the office.
Siemens gives us a lot of responsabilities despite our lack of experience but this is great for our development. I have been involved in lots of projects where I was solely responsible for its completion which was required by external and internal clients. Siemens views apprentices as the future of the business and this is reflected by the investments they make in me.
The programme has been running for a number of years and many apprentices have already successfully completed the course. As such the programme is fairly organised and there is lots of support available should I need it. I have monthly meetings with my mentor to ensure everything is going fine and my manager has a 1-1 meeting with me to discuss any problems I may have with college or my NVQ. I am regularly put on new and interesting training courses to ensure I have the knowledge to do my job.
My college provides me with adequate support to complete my HNC should I need it. I would say the support is not as good as my employer but generally good enough for me to complete work as necessary.
As mentioned above I have monthly meetings with a mentor and my manager to discuss any problems I may be having.
I am lucky to still be living at home so my living costs are low. My salary is more than adequate for living from home and a few of my fellow apprentices are living on their own.
Siemens encourages us to volunteer at least two days of work each year helping the community. They sponsor a number of events which can also get involved in. Meanwhile the training team often has fun events running that we can get involved in.
Yes
Siemens is a great company overall and there apprentice program is excellent.
Do your research on the company, and any experience you have of solving problems or working is great to talk about in an interview. If you have a logical forward thinking mind, this is what Siemens are looking for.
