My day to day duties include working with SCADA systems to implement new PLC systems for Network Rail projects. The work involves receiving I/O schedules from the customer and then generating a configuration within our Fastflex configuration tool. We then map each signal within the I/O schedule to a dataset within the configuration and apply specific logic to each signal. We then upload this to the processor and perform FAT, we then go to site to perform SAT and commission the project.
Siemens have provided me with a HNC and I am currently working towards my HND/ Foundation degree with one year BEng top up available after. Internal training involves health and safety, LEAN, Fastflex, Networking, Personal Track Safety (PTS) etc. Personal skills I have learnt have been the use of microsoft office software, networking principals and the workings of PLC systems.
I really enjoyed going on Site as I was able to take part in a 2 month exchange program with Siemens RE. During this placement I went to London, Brighton, Newark and Doncaster to see how the substations are configured for both OHLE and 3rd rail electrification. This helped massively as I could see how our product interfaces to other equipment which I would not have been easily accessible otherwise. Other parts of the programme are not so good, for example site work often has to be requested, where I feel this should be mandatory for a real understanding. The pay is very competitive with regular pay rises available.
The annual pay rise makes me feel appreciated as does the Champions Award scheme where colleagues can nominate you for an award where they feel you have worked well.
Marking of the apprenticeship work could be quicker to ensure we progress within the company faster.
None really, our employer sorts out the framework.
We can get guidance if we are stuck, however without much site work it is virtually impossible. Thankfully, my employer placed me on a 2 month placement which helped.
It seems to be competitive within industry with an annual bonus/pay rise available.
Yes, volunteering and football.
Yes
Good company to work for, they comply with industry standards and make you feel valued as an employee.
Research the company beforehand and what that specific section of Siemens does as it is a very large company. Stand out.
