Apprentice aircraft technician Maintaining typhoon aircraft, using the tasks to complete my NVQ Working on acceptance jets as part of a team for the Typhoon Total availability contract, ensuring they meet the required standards for the squadrons.
currently completing Lv3 NVQ in aircraft maintenance Internal courses: - Fueling/Defueling - ESS Usage course - Human factors training I have learnt the basic skills needed for working on aircraft, this includes learning the dangers of being around the aircraft and having the basic hand skills for safe and effective work whilst on and around the aircraft.
I have enjoy my program a lot currently as I find the work interesting, the program has met and exceeded my expectations for amount of work, pay and any assistance needed during my time here
being an apprentice I was expecting to be looked down on a lot but I now feel I am valued on my team and within the company.
with my program being a new one for BAE systems there was some teething issues from the beginning, the organisation has improved but still could be done better.
we have regular meetings with our NVQ team and if we have any questions then they always seem happy to help
The support received from supervisors and managers is good when a problem arises, although there has been times when I feel I have been kept in the dark with what's going on and sometimes worried about my future with the company
currently my salary just covers my living costs although throughout the apprenticeship there is a variety of pay rises that relieve pressure, there is also an annual bonus that comes with meeting targets that includes bonus pay and free shares
There has been a variety of opportunities outside of work including a STEM team, sponsored walks, and various events that are currently being organised such as a scrapheap challenge style event.
Yes
Overall the apprenticeship is a good opportunity and opens opportunity into a full career within BAE systems
I would have like to have been told about the apprenticeship in more detail but as it was a 'trailblazer' apprenticeship it felt like bae systems themselves didn't really know what to expect.
