Apprentice Software Engineer During term time I work 3 days a week in office (Mon, Wed, Fri) and 2 days a week I am at university (Tue, Thu). While I am in the office I am placed in a placement which last for 8 months. During these 8 months I work on a wide variety of tasks going through the full software engineering lifecycle. I am currently working on a project where I have had to derive requirements and I am taking it through to the delivery of the simulation. While at university we are in lectures with full time students who are completing the same course.
I have been on many training courses while at BAE Systems, all which have helped me as a person and as a software engineer. We have been on Ada training course, British Values and Prevent, many online courses covering a variety of areas, ELLA course.
I really enjoy the work I am doing. I have been trusted to create a simulation by myself which the customer has backed with hours instead of some work which a full time employee is completing. The team I work in are great, easy to get along with and helped me to settle into the team quickly. Every team I have been in so far have been very welcoming, exceeding the expectations I had.
I feel very valued by BAE Systems. I have been trusted to create a simulation by myself which the customer has backed with hours instead of some work which a full time employee is completing. My manager appreciates the hard work I am putting in and other teams know that I am the one creating the simulation.
I am part of the very first intake of EDAS software engineers so as you can imagine not everything has been smoothed out. The induction was well organised as we joined with schemes which have been running for many years. The training the same but we did feedback that some training could have been done a little bit later so we didn't feel we were ready for a full training course. The support we receive is very good at work and at university.
We have a point of contact at university and as soon as we have a problem we let him know and he gets it sorted as soon as he can. All lecturers answer our emails when we have any questions and are happy to help when we are struggling.
My manager regularly checks up on me and asks if I need any help. This is the same from the safeguarding officer. Any support I have needed has been provided very quickly when asked for.
Very well. I moved into a flat close to university and work and the salary meets the cost of living away from home. I did initially travel to work and university from quite a distance away and the salary also covered these costs.
There are a few events outside of work we can get involved in like recently I played for the EDAS football team.
Yes
It is a good company and they look after the apprentices very well.
Talk about how you currently are able to manage your time, maybe you are part of a sports team or Scouts/Guides or have done DofE
