For the first year of my apprenticeship I was in the training school where I attended college 1 day a week doing BTEC aeronautical engineering. For the rest of the week for the first year I did various 8 week stints in different disciplines such as manual fitting, electrical install and CAD. Then for the rest of the apprenticeship I did various 4 month placements in different departments across site. The one I am currently in is called facilities engineering which (simplified) is the project managing of investment projects such as new equipment being installed or construction works going ahead.
I have learnt so many new skills as I've been through the different departments and also the training skills. Generally speaking I understand engineering to a much higher level, being able to converse with professionals and have constructive conversations. I know the basic of manual fitting techniques, electrical works and the use of CAD software. I have developed my existing social skills and my confidence has much improved.
Different placement I have been on I have liked more than others however I have never strongly disliked a placement and they have all been engaging. I love my current role as a facilities engineer, so much so that's what I am choosing to specialise in and come out my time as. I really get on with the people here and the work is varied and engaging. The culture here is great as everyone is happy to help you and it feels as if everyone is striving towards the same goal. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as an apprentice.
I feel like a valued employee at BAE Systems. Even as an apprentice you are treated with respect from management and your colleagues. There are plenty of opportunities provided to do things extra-curricular such as going abroad on the German exchange, the princes trust and world skills events. Team mates give you proper jobs to do that make a valued contribution to the team.
My programme is very well organised. When you start you go through a 2 week induction process where you are taught the basic rules and regulations before you start work. This is also an opportunity to become acquainted with your new apprentice colleagues. Throughout the apprenticeship there is a competent early careers team who are there to support and mentor you through your time. Placement are always aware that apprentices are coming and are well prepared.
I have a dedicated assessor who I have regular reviews with to review my progress, set actions and who I can ask for help also if need be. There is also an early careers team who are dedicated to the management of all aspects of our apprenticeship including time and attendance, reviews and additional support. All my placement supervisors and colleagues have been more than happy to help and I feel this culture applies throughout the business.
My answer to 6a applies to this question as my training provider and employer are the same entity. I have a dedicated assessor who I have regular reviews with to review my progress, set actions and who I can ask for help also if need be. There is also an early careers team who are dedicated to the management of all aspects of our apprenticeship including time and attendance, reviews and additional support. My salary is more than enough to pay for board, running a car and money left over for personal use.
There a lots of opportunities outside of work. I have helped out at the apprentice open evenings on multiple occasions and supported the new apprenticeship intake interviews. I am also a qualified STEM ambassador for the company where I can go into local schools and colleges to tell them about my role and what opportunities are available at BAE Systems.
Yes
I have been at BAE Systems for nearly 4 years now and am due to finish my apprentice in the next couple weeks. I have loved my time here as I've met some really great people who have become close friends and had some awesome experiences. I love the role I'm in and I cant complain about the salary. The culture here is great and I never dread coming to work.
The application process is made up of an online application, online tests and an interview. Be honest in your application but try to stand out, outline what makes you special. Take your time with the tests and have a paper/pen to hand. Be calm and collected at your interview, speak with confidence and be yourself.
