I am a engineering apprentice doing a level 3 higher apprenticeship. I am currently on a CAD placement within the ASK building at Samlesbury site. I have previously completed placements on both fitting and electrical within the ask building, all of these have helped me gain skills that will prove useful in later life and within the business.
So far during the apprenticeship, I have completed a week at outward bound at Ulswater in the Lake District. This week helped to develop my organisational and team working skills. The different placements I have completed so far have also helped to develop my practical skills and have bettered my ability to understand and develop technical drawings.
So far I have thoroughly enjoyed the apprenticeship and it has lived up to my expectations. I greatly enjoy the work that I do on a daily basis and feel that the skills I am learning will come of great use in the future, at home and within the business
Within BAE systems I feel valued as an apprentice. When working as an apprentice within the company, you are treated as the next generation of young workers who will go on to be valuable resources to the company. Our hard work is recognised by staff during our regular reviews with managers and training staff
The programme is well organised with most information required being provided when needed. Before starting with the company, all apprentices received a week of presentations containing most of the information that would be required for the following year, this included a short introduction into how health and safety worked at the company.
Training staff are helpful and will provide as much support as possible when it is required, this includes showing apprentices where they may have gone wrong in practical and written work. Training staff are always happy to help any apprentices and ensure that apprentices are not struggling with the quality of work that is expected of them
Office staff are always available if help is required, often for apprentices who are struggling with work load or stress. the managers and HR team are always easy to contact, either via email or in person and are happy to help with any situation. If anonymous help is required, many websites can be found on BAE Systems computers which are very helpful.
the provided salary is more than enough to cover the cost of living and travel between work and home. The cafeteria in the ASK building is well subsidised, meaning that any food or lunches are of reasonable value and good quality. the site is also easy to access by car with adequate parking.
There are many company events, clubs and societies available outside of work that are provided by the BAE Systems. Many of these can be found on the internal internet, with links and email contacts for the relevant employees. Outside of work I play a lot of music and go to the gym.
