  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Quantity Surveying. Final Accounting, Cost Forecasting, Assessing applications for payments. Issuing Payment Certificates to contractors. Creating Orders for Tasks. Creating Task orders. Liaising with project manager, placement manager (commercial mgr). Often working on Site office to directly communicate with supplier for joint Highways contract. Managed a £40k general building contract package in my first placement. Ended placement on Stations Upgrade project. Currently on a London Higways Alliance project dealing with contract aspect of the project in commercial department.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Will be gaining an NVQ Level 3 in surveying. Will lead onto a 3 year part time BSC in Quantity Surveying. Organisational skills improved - working for deadlines and managing priority of tasks. multitasking - havng to do different works at the same time. Internal training - Budgeting and forecasting. External training - Estimating Level 3.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Work - varied every time a certain task is completed. Roughly have had several different types of works a QS can do. Team is very supportive and understand the help an apprentice will require thus the support that comes with it. Big company, proud culture, and great work ethic around the office, as well as being a very relaxed environment. Better than expected as I previously had no idea of how a professional working life would be. Great place to start.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Transport for London?
  • Performance aims and reviews with placement manager start of placement, mid placement, and end of placement - very motivating. Manager willing to help with anything required big or small. Weekly appreciation emails by commercial head, with individuals also being praised for good work. A lot of support from academic partners - UCEM and allocated UCEM mentor for TfL very dedicated to our feedback and progress. Very involved with tasks. Treated the same as any other professional in the company.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Induction insightful placement specific. lots of training available. Immense support academic and work. Mentoring and reviews from placement manager, line manager and academic mentor on a regular basis. team hierarchy well structured. Easy to identify whose who. From immediate team to COO.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Workshop every month. Accessibility via VLE - tutors very quick with response regarding course questions. Issues raised get dealt with swiftly. very enjoyable with professionals from different companies being in the same course.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Placement manager - immediate point of contact. Super supportive. HR team on hand throughout the day. quick response directed to a member. Accessibility of support is good, reply received in office or by email and meeting easily offered. Problems get solved efficiently because people responsible know what they are doing. Active learning and support is encouraged.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • A lot of savings made personally. Biggest perk is the free zone 1-6 oyster card for me and nominated family member. Lots of discounts and savings on entertainment and social activities across London. Location very accessible. based in easy reach of stations within zone 1 and 2.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • training available to work as qualified Customer Service Assistants during busy times to help passengers commute. Lots of social events going on to help other departments. Also plenty of groups to join, for example meditation classes which I find very relaxing.

  • Yes

  • Best apprenticeship available in Quantity Surveying from my aspect and from what ive heard on feedback from other Quantity Surveyor apprentices at other companies. Good working environment and flexible lifestyle. best way to start professional career and best alternative to university.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
  • Preparing for assessment days - consider incorporating the core values stated on website. specifically will tell you what behaviours theyre looking for. The company takes these behaviours very seriously and will ask you about how you achieve them throughout your apprenticeship (reviews).
