Project Management Higher Apprentice Review

As a Project Management Higher Apprentice I undertake 4 monthly placements around the business. I attend University one day a week and can become involved in STRETCH assignments and STEM Ambassadorship. My roles vary dependant on my current placement but this has included risk assessing, developing Level 4 plans on MSP, Creating RACI charts, Charing meetings, Auditing processes, running reports and developing communication plans. I work closely within the teams I am assigned and also have many opportunities to work with senior managers/directors of the business who have a wealth of experience and knowledge. As part of my apprenticeship I undertake STRETCH assignments which allow me to have more freedom and responsibility helping to develop competencies. Currently I am Project Lead for the Annual BAE Charity Football Tournament and Deputy co-ordinator for the businesses Chairman's awards. Both roles allow me to interact with numerous different businesses outside of BAE as well as gain exposure across functions internally.

I have developed a variety of different skills including my competence in using simple programmes such as excel. An important skill I have developed is my ability to learn for experience and how to plan effectively mitigating all possible risks. Studying for a foundation degree alongside my apprenticeship has thoroughly assisted my on the job learning as it has provided me with a wide range of knowledge of which I can use within my placements e.g. understanding WBS/PBS. Although I have always been a strong communicator this apprenticeship has allowed me to develop this skill as it has taught me about the importance of changing methods of communication dependant on the listener and also better ways to communicate in difficult situations.

Having a mixture of placement work, university and STRTECH keeps the programme interesting. Each aspect compliments each other making the programme engaging and valuable.

Due to the variety of different ways I can influence and input ideas into the business even though I have just started makes me feel valued. Being provided meaningful work gives me a sense of responsibility and drive to achieve. The amount of investment in apprenticeships is amazing as BAE are providing me with a foundation degree even though this is not necessary for my apprenticeship. The different schemes the company offers such as the Share Scheme or the Pension Scheme proves how much the company values its employees.

The induction to the business was thorough and I feel as if I was provided with everything I needed to know. The week long processes was very jam packed with information making parts easy to forget- no other way to do this due to the amount of information required due to the type of business. There are numerous different support mechanisms from placement managers, line managers, discipline managers, mentors, buddies and skills coach. As many of the processes are currently changing the organisation/structure is a bit confusing at times and lines of management can become unclear. Processes need to be defined more however I feel as if this is only because they are knew and will start to become clearer.

My training provider provided me with all their contact details and access to a VLE with masses of resources/information/tools. After assessments thorough feedback is provided allowing me to have a detailed understanding of why I was presented with a grade. My tutors provide interactive and engaging lectures making the learning more enjoyable and easier to understand. Questions and discussions are encouraged.

The support is endless within my programme. I can initially list 5 main lines of support that I can go to although there are many more. Regular reviews, forums and surveys allow multiple opportunities to air my ideas/constraints. The variety of training provided means that I can learn about important issues and know how to handle certain situations e.g. Mental Health Awareness or PREVENT training.

As s young girl who finds it difficult to save money I believe the pay salary provided allows a good balance between social expenditure, Living costs and saving. Having spent most of my wages so far on booking holidays/festivals/concerts I have still found the remaining wage comfortable to live on. Although I don't currently have many outgoings my disposable income levels remain high.

The company advertises a variety of different voluntary opportunities that employees can get involved with. There are also different clubs advertised such as rounder's, football and rugby. The companies employee portal provides a wide range of discounts to local gyms and attractions. There are also a range of company events from Chairman's Awards to charity football.

Well established programmes that have been running for many years therefore the training provided comes from experience and input from other apprentices. The new training facility currently being built highlights the investment BAE makes in its apprentices and the variety of training and opportunity demonstrates a learning culture.

Seize all opportunities provided to you. If you are struggling with anything use the available support systems as they are really useful. Don't be put off applying due to intelligence- BAE are more looking for well rounded individuals with a willingness and eagerness to learn.
