I am an Electrical Designer Apprentice for a Nuclear Submarine manufacturing company. My work involves routing electrical cableways, integrating electrical equipment and cables and producing drawings for the electrical connections between equipment.
This apprenticeship has enabled me to further develop my communication skills as it involves working with different people and teams. It also has allowed me to go out of my comfort zone and try something new as well as provide challenging work that still keeps my brain busy.
The programme is enjoyable as it involves always moving around, meeting new people and trying new things. This allows me to gain a better understanding and knowledge of the company as a whole. I have learnt an immense ammount about the inner working of a Nuclear Submarine.
I feel respected and valued here at BAE Systems as most Apprentices are treat equally and given responsibility for the work they are allocated.
This differs depending on what topic you speak about. The programme is organised in that it has a step-by-step process that is understood by all in order to complete the apprenticeship. However, at times, there is a lack of organisation and it can mean Apprentices struggle to become familiar with how the company works.
The support from Furness College as BAE Systems' training provider is phenomenal. The facilities that are available to use and the resources that the tutors provide and lecture on are incredibly useful. These can also be used for revision material in your own time.
I receive a lot of support from the employer through things like 12 weekly progress reviews where they give us feedback from college and work together to analyse how we are getting on in the Apprenticeship programme.
It is a fantastic basic pay for my age between 16 and 20 years old. It allows me to enjoy my life as well as save money for things I want to do in the future (holidays, a new car, a house, etc.).
There is the STEM programme which is well respected and always kept busy which I am a part of and enjoy doing it to give something back.
Yes
It is a job for life and the company give you everything you need and teach you everything you need to know to conduct your job properly as well as providing you with a good, stable pay deal. There are many opportunities to go and do different things within the company and learn new things.
Not to be scared about the sheer size of the company or thinking that you wont be able to get a job here because you dont know anything about Nuclear Submarines. BAE Systems gives you the tools and training to do the job so as long as you are hardworking, passionate, dedicated and determined, you too can be successfull.
