My job title is a Hull Designer. In my current role, I am responsible for ensuring that outputs for hotwork details are completed to the correct standard and on time to meet the deadlines. I liaise mainly with just my team at the moment, to ensure that all work being carried out is being done so correctly and efficiently.
During my time within my current team, I have learnt more about the basics of a submarine and the different areas that I have not experienced previously. I have completed training courses on CAD software packages and have attended open days and company briefs.
I absolutely love the team in which I am currently working on and have developed a strong bond with each member. Nothing is ever too much trouble with any of them, and I know who to go to if I have a specific query regarding something. There is however, part of the programme that I do not enjoy.. which is college! We are made to feel useless and worthless when studying at the college, but aside from this the programme is great!
Within the past couple of months I feel I have been valued an awful lot. My current project leader does nothing but praise me within my 12 weekly reviews, and has nominated me for apprentice of the month on several occasions. Even though I am still only training and are new to learning everything regards the role, there is never a time in which I feel left out.
The organisation and structure of the programme is incredible. We rotate on a 20 week basis where we join a different team to help give us an insight into the different areas of the business. Our assessors and apprentice team are there when needed as well as our project/assistant project leaders.
I feel that the college in which we study do not support students as well as they could do. They do not appreciate that each individual learns at a different pace to one another, making people feel like they are worthless and useless at what it is they are 'teaching' us.
Any help needed is there for us from the start to the end of the day! Everyone within the business are never too busy to give advice or assist in something you are stuck on. Most people have a huge amount of patience when you ask for any guidance they can give and they are all understanding when you ask for their support.
For an apprentice wage, the company offers a very competitive salary compared to the several other companies around here/
There are several different sports and activities available out there for all age groups. Everyone is made to feel welcome at these events which also supports the local communities.
Yes
I feel for the area it is one of the largest working companies around here. It provides a boost for the local community and keeps a large % of the furness population in a job.
My advice would be to research the company in depth before getting to your interview stage. Use 'wow' words within your application to catch the readers attention, and come across to the interviewer as confident without being over powering.
