My title is Actuarial technician and i work in retirement and investment (manageing pension schemes), the work i do closely mirrors the work of the graduates in my team, i manage queries from clients, we work out members pensions and provide them to the client,I help out in scheme valuations, i complete the billing for the 9 clients i work on also. our office is in the city (London) and is very social, we often go out for drinks on a friday and have team social events such as table tennis tournaments. as the work i do is client based, over christmas it can get really quiet, this is the downside to the job as the days becoming long and dull. I have a lot of responsibilites and often delegate work to other colleagues.
the study side of my apprenticeship has helped me understand how pension schemes work, especially on a large scale, the internal training provided is excellent, the speakers are really clear and helpful
company culture is to work hard but also be sociable, if i need to leave the office early for an appointment i am always allowed but in return i make sure my work is complete and all deadlines are met, my team relationship is strong and ive even booked a holiday with a group of colleagues at work
i do feel valued but its hard to guage, some of my colleagues provide feedback to work i complete and this helps, if colleagues dont i often chase them for some tips, this can be seen as pushy and i dont do this often, in tasks however, i am always given a role to play and help out in.
very, the exam we study for the CAA GLOBAL is 6 exams, we do 2 as part of the apprenticeship and we get internal and external training for this. i know i can ask for specific training if needed and it will be arranged.
in a year we are given 8 study days from AON, 2 of these are online tutorials from our training provider, they are helpful but i think having a full day of online tutorials does become overwhelming, it would help if they were broken into half days
often i dont know what i need training on but at aon you can opt to sign onto training courses through our AON UNIVERSITY, this helps a lot as if im unsure on something i can always brush up on it.
i live at home, and i couldnt afford to move out in london, my travel and expenses are easily covered and i have a good social life, but i would like to move out soon!
There are constantly networking events and socials, but not always targetted at apprentices, theres only 1 other apprentice in my field in my team of 200 my manager may not always want me to attend voluntary events becuase he values my time in the office learning on/off the job
Yes
the location of the office is easier to get to from any part of london, the wage is respectable and the social life is fun,i would warn them of the proffesional enviornment however.
be confident and enjoy the role you're applying for, do your research and always have an open positive mind, some days you feel tired and wont want to come in, but you need to
