First year advanced engineering apprentice. Fitter. Completing my NVQ level 2 and just going onto specialisation. Over the next 3 years I will be learning fitting and manufacturing techniques. Have regular meetings with instructors to see how I'm getting on. I am expected to complete assignments and assessments from work and college days.
I have nearly gained my NVQ level 2, I am learning many new things such as CAD, electrical and fitting skills. I have been on internal training courses such as resistance plus and prevent. These have helped my learn about behaviour in and out of the company. Personal skills have developed and confidence in the workplace has increased.
Really enjoy working in the team I am in and also enjoy working with all the instructors. The company cultured is relaxed yet it directs you firmly in the right direction. I knew current apprentices before I came to the company so they gave me a good idea of what the job would be like, however it has exceeded my expectations.
I feel like they have invested lots of time and money into me and are helping me personally to develop my skills and knowledge. I have being given recognition for good work in the form of a financial bonus, and I always feel involved with the work that is being undertaken. If I am struggling with work I will always be helped by instructors and given sound advice on how to keep up.
Sometimes the work schedule can be slightly out of time due to different circumstances, but the effort is always made by the instructors to try and get it back on track. There is a clear hierarchy of people that we have been made aware about, which outlines who to go see for certain problems or queries we have. We have regular meetings with management and instructors to make sure we are up to date with work and make sure everything is going well.
Some tutors from our training provider help us and provide us with necessary information for us to complete assignments to a good level, however some are slow at giving us feedback on the work that we have completed. This can be frustrating at times as the work can get on top of us and cause us to not only get behind with college work but also NVQ work. The training we get is not always enjoyable and could be executed in more interesting ways.
The employer offers lots of support and guidance for us while we are at work. This includes things like one on one reviews, probationary reviews and feedback on our work. All instructors take time to help you overcome any problems that you may face and will never put pressure on you by giving unrealistic goals.
The salary meets my needs well as I don't only receive my salary but I receive expenses for my food and travel. This provides me with the bit of extra money that I need to pay for things while I am living away in a hotel. The salary leaves me enough money to save for a house, run and pay for a car and also enough money for socialising on a weekend.
We did an outward bound course with work on the second week of the apprenticeship where we learnt lots of skills and made many friends. We are doing a community project in June where we will volunteer at a local community to help out with small jobs. There is some apprentices that have been given the opportunity to speak outside of work.
Yes
Very good apprenticeship with lots of potential to learn new skills, make new friends and develop yourself as a person. The salary is more than comfortable, the work isn't stressful and the work done is enjoyable. It is a highly regarded company with a great name for itself and theres a great sense of pride working here.
Make sure that your application outlines everything that you could offer to the business, making sure you include your key skills and past experience. Dress smart for the assessment day and be prepared to build something under a time limit. Take in a project to show the management team while getting interviewed, talk about the project and show your skills and knowledge on engineering.
