  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • The apprenticeship I am on has me training to be a commissioning engineer for the business, we have a day release every Monday in which we attend college for the HNC course then the rest of the week we are in the business on rotations in all of the areas within Siemens, each rotation has a different length dependent upon the complexity and importance. We also get the opportunity to do site work to develop site skills.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned a lot so far with Siemens and have been able to achieve qualifications such as PEO units and the HNC course, as well as this we have been put through many training courses to aid our work and allow us to work safely, as well as training courses each rotation has allowed a huge insight into the business and allowed me to develop my knowledge of the company further.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy all aspects of my work and the team I work within is great, everyone is there to help and any questions you have on certain areas and in rotations are answered and fully explained, the apprenticeship has exceeded expectations and I am really enjoying this opportunity so far and there is a lot more still to come and look forward to within the apprenticeship.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Siemens?
  • As a Siemens employee I feel appreciated and well looked after as a member of the team, I also feel like I am contributing to the success of the company as a whole with some of the activities I have undertaken on site works in different projects Siemens have and also within the business as a whole. I have also been awarded a Siemens champions award from another employee for good efforts and being happy to help and responsible in my actions.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The organization and structure has been slow to get going within the apprenticeship however it has now been sorted and is a lot clearer in terms of having a structured plan for the future, at the start we were full time college based doing the HNC course and PEO units which allowed us to gain valuable skills that we are able to apply to our work when we started officially in the business and on rotations.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The support from our provider is great, we have had a lot of opportunities given to us that we have been able to capitalize from in our work and any support needed we are given, if we ever feel like we need extra time to do a task or if we are challenged in any way they are there to help if needed and it makes you feel reassured that the company care and are looking out for your best interests.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary received from Siemens is very good, it allows you to cover all the costs that are necessary and have a little spare at the end for savings or investment, on a personal note a lot of my salary goes into traveling to work as I live around 45 miles away from my work place and also have a toll I need to pass through to get to work, this makes a 90 mile per day round trip for me and adds around 3 hours onto my working day through travel time, however the salary does allow me to do everything I need to do.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are opportunities and schemes in place outside of work such as voluntary work for many different charities and events that Siemens supports, Siemens allocates 2 days of the working year to each employee to fulfill voluntary work if they wish to do so which is a great way to help the community providing man hours to charity which allows jobs to get done instead of having the money for a job but not the man hours to complete it.

  • 9. Would you recommend Siemens to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Siemens as a whole is a great company to work for, they give you great opportunities and there is a lot of support from them to ensure your welfare is looked after and you are happy at work. There are many areas within Siemens and you can chose your path and how you wish to take your career is your choice but Siemens will back you all the way.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Siemens?
  • When applying to Siemens you should know the background and the areas there are available within the business, you should have areas of interest you wish to know more about, you should be confident and have a positive attitude whilst also being polite and appreciative.
