  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role in the company varies every three months as during the apprenticeship, we change placements on a quarterly basis. currently my role is in the technical publications department, modifying and updating actual aircraft manuals for use by our customers. I also have been responsible for drawing up plans and creating registers and databases.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned how to use SGML computer code to create documents that are of a certain standard, along with using the newer standard of XML. this apprenticeship has taken skills that I have picked up from previous employment and honed them through real business experience and further education combined.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have really enjoyed this programme, coming from other positions in the retail and service sector, I can honestly state that I feel this is much more professional environment conducive to real personal and career progression. my time at BAE has developed my existing skillset and added several strings to my bow so to speak.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BAE Systems?
  • I always feel valued no matter which department I happen to be working in. the work I do is real work that has a real impact both locally and on a larger national (and on occasion, international) scale. knowing that the work I do has been used in countries as far a field as south east Asia, gives me a sense of pride that I have not felt in other positions with other companies.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • the programme is very well structured. you are made aware on day one what the programme entails. you work 4 days within the business and 1 day in further education per week. while at work, you complete an NVQ qualification. the programme structure is well defined and there is a lot of support provided.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • the main training provider is the company itself, meaning that help and support is never far away. there are contacts I can speak to if I have an issue and the further education provider is very competent and supportive. there are also employee support tools provided by the company that apprentices have access.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • the support given by the company is unparalleled, other companies I have worked for offer nowhere near the same support tools, help and advice that BAE does. we are constantly reminded that these tools are available and are actively encouraged to use them if required. there is also a confidential help line to use if you feel that you cannot talk to someone in person

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • the salary package and benefits are very competitive, I earn more now as an apprentice than I have in other full time positions I have held. the salary is more than enough to run a car, save for the future, and enjoy holidays and other leisure activities. speaking to my friends and peers who are currently in full time work with other companies, I can say that the salary at BAE is extremely competitive.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I have personal experience of opportunities outside of the office. ranging from things such as social events with team members, to three week long working trips in Germany. I have had opportunities to work up and down the country as well as outside the UK. there are always opportunities available for those willing to chase them.

  • 9. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend BAE Systems to a friend because it is the best place I have worked. the work I do is challenging but rewarding, and the salary and benefits package is very competitive. if anyone has an interest in engineering, defence, or just STEM subjects in general. there are multiple opportunities for an exciting career.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • prepare thoroughly for you interview, make sure that you know about the company, its products and services and its history. most importantly just be yourself and show what you have to offer as an employee. the interview process is semi formal but don't let this intimidate you. the interviewers aren't there to make you feel under pressure.
