I am an Project Engineer at Flintshire Bridge Converter station on the Western Link Project. Daily task include working on the completion of my work package (given to my by the project manager). I have daily interactions with the project manager, site manager and site team. I have a commitment to college every Monday where I study to gain HNC/HND.
Completed a substation internal training course. Improved my IT skills. Learnt about my future full time role. Improved my formal writing. Improved in all my topics at college.
I enjoy my day to day work, i am always learning something new and this is something I really need as it keeps entertained and challenged and a daily basis. So far I think this course has has at least met my expectations and in some areas passed my expectations, particularly in my responsibilities.
I feel as though I am valued by Siemens as I have been given some responsibilities that really just really on myself to complete. My Project Manger is very good as he helps me with daily tasks such as any quires I have. I am involved in the close out of the Western link project, this is one of the biggest project Siemens has been involved in and thus shows my value to the company in that they trust me to work on it.
The programme is fairly well organised I have completed my induction and have been on a substation training course. I have also had a one to one meeting with my line manager to discuss to future goals and what is expected. I am given goals that are agreed on by myself and my line manager, they are uploaded to an internal online tool called 4Success were they can be viewed and monitored by myself until the date comes to review again. There is also a wide array of information to help guide you.
In college some of the tutors are good and some are not so good. I did expect the level of the tutors to be high however in my opinion some really do lack the quality needed for us to gain as much as possible from our experience. I have made my thoughts know to my training programme leader through our one to one meetings. I can also contact him via email or even drop him a call so I feel confident in bringing any issues or concerns up as he listens to what I have to say and trys to help me.
Siemens have a HR hotline yo can ring for any related HR matters, this is very helpful and in most cases the problem is dealt with there and then. Being on the Western link team means we a PA for the project and this person is another point of contact for an array of matters and is very helpful. I have received support/guidance from my project manager on a daily basis.
I would say the salary is ok given the fact that all your education is payed for as well. Being based at site for the last few months all expenses can be claimed from the company. When based at the office it is a 100 mile round trip from my home and this can be quite expensive with today's fuel price. I am not currently aware if there is anything I claim for this journey.
There are many voluntary initiatives where Siemens will allow so to take a few days a year to go and help your chosen activity without losing out on pay. There is a gym class every week at the office. Siemens also runs programmes to help with the community especially on projects were the local community is effected such as digging up land to lay cables. There is also an event where Siemens go to local schools to help educated kids and guide them for the next step in their lives
Yes
Siemens is a very big company and offers a wide range of courses in a number of different fields so you can be sure there will be something for you. The people at Siemens are very friendly and knowledgeable and I feel as this is a perfect place to learn, develop and grow.
I would advise to do as much research into Siemens as possible as this shows you really care about working for Siemens. I would also research into the role you are applying for and and really do a lot of research into this as I feel this is the most important part as it will show the interviewers that you have a genuine interest in the role. Boarding process is quite smooth however there is a lot of paperwork to read and understand so take your time and read things properly to ensure you take advantage of all the opportunities Siemens has to offer. I would have liked to have been told more about My Choice, pensions etc ideally a presentation and Q&A session as I feel it is quite hard to get to take a lot of the information in and fully understand everything.
