Currently as an apprentice, I complete 7 different placements in different areas of engineering, which are; design, systems, test, manufacturing engineering, aircraft fitting, electrical and in service support. Throughout these placements, my job role differs depending on the work which is being carried out at the time. Due to the nature of the business, I am unable to discuss in detail what this may involve.
I have learnt various new skills throughout my time as an apprentice. I have completed in training in various areas such as; CAD, aircraft fitting, machining, electrical, looming and use of laithes. As well as this, I have completed courses in manual handling, first aid, electromagnetic testing. My communication, analytical and technical skills have massively improved through participation in different activities and I am currently studying a HNC in aeronautical engineering.
I thoroughly enjoy my programme as it allows to me to progress as an individual as well as improve my career prospects. I enjoy the team working nature of the business and I am constantly improving my engineering skills in different areas. I also enjoy the exposure I get to different areas of engineering, thus giving me a taste of the different functions within the business.
I feel very valued by BAE Systems as their company ethos is built around employing young people and training them to a high standard. I am constantly praised by either the manager I am currently working for, or by the training staff. Awards ceremonies are also present in order to commend individuals for excellence in certain areas. Enrichment activities are also provided to apprentices in order to get them more involved in areas of the business.
The programme is very structured as it follows a strict regime in order to give apprentices a feel for different areas of the business, as well as allowing them time to complete their NVQ in engineering, and any other relevant qualifications. The appropriate training is provided in order to allow you to fulfil your job role and the support networks are in place in order to provide help when needed. Apprentices are also given an assessor who has regular contact meetings with them in order to see how they are getting on and whether they are struggling with anything.
A lot of support is provided as an assessor is assigned to apprentices in order to help them get through their NVQ and any other qualifications. Training staff are heavily involved with the apprentices development, and they ensure that all the correct training and equipment is provided in order to fulfil their job role.
A lot of support is provided from the employer when working on site. The appropriate equipment and PPE is given allowing you to conduct your job efficiently. Mentor schemes are in place by both apprentices and senior workers, providing support to apprentices where required.
The salary is very good for an apprentice and HR help to negotiate pay increases when certain levels of the NVQ are achieved. The travel costs between sites are reimbursed for mileage, and the appropriate travel units to work are paid by company. Location of the sites is not far from the city, thus making it commutable.
There are a lot of company events held which allow you to participate by showcasing the company and the company's STEM careers. Other enrichment activities are available, such as; Prince's Trust, German Exchange, Innovation Challenge, Apprentice Taster Days, Apprentice Open Evenings etc.
Yes
It is a great scheme to be on due to the development opportunities available to you, as well as the qualifications which can be obtained. The networking opportunities are huge and the career prospects available are fantastic. As well as this, a competitive salary is paid in order to ensure that your general living costs can be accommodated.
I would advise that you research the company and what we do, and have a vague idea of what engineering aspect you like. As well as this, spend time preparing for the interview and assessment day and revise your maths and English skills.
