  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Design Engineer Apprentice Daily tasks include completing CAD design for railway signalling along with accompanying paperwork. Working in a project team to meet deadlines - currently working on the Angerstein Signalling Renewals project. Interact heavily within the team for problem solving and queries, occasionally interact with testing/installation staff for queries.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • BTEC Level 3 in operations and maintenance, NVQ level 2 in practical engineering, Basic and Intermediate Signalling Training, CAD training. Learning to work in a team and about the technology used in railway signalling.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the work and find it an interesting challenge. The team and company culture is positive and welcoming. It is a lot less intimidating than expected.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Siemens?
  • Within my project team I feel well appreciated as I am given the same work as a qualified designer, just under mentorship, and it is recognized when I do work on time etc.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I would say the apprenticeship is well structured and supported. The studying is completed on a specific day per week. The programme is well organised with clear targets to hit for training and qualifications. I have a designated mentor to assist me with my work.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The opportunity for support appears available but I haven't required much assistance.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A good amount. I have regular reviews with the apprentice manager, and access to support from management if required. I have not yet found a need to contact HR about anything.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • As I live with my parents and live fairly close it meets my costs fine.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes. Many volunteering opportunities are advertised, along with internal activities such as a coffee roulette program.

  • Yes
