As a Technician of the advanced apprenticeship scheme I first complete a year of training in mechanical and electrical skills. After this we move onto seven 4 month placements in the business where we could take on different roles; These could include In Service Support, Design, Manufacturing, Systems and Testing.
Throughout the scheme you partake in a day release to college every week. Over the course of 4-5 years you will gain a BTEC National Diploma Level 3 in Aeronautical Engineering, a HNC (Higher National Certificate) in Aeronautical Engineering, as well as a HND (Higher National Diploma) in Aeronautical Engineering.
I enjoy the programme a lot as I am able to experience a wide range of job roles across the entire business. All the teams I have been able to work with have been very friendly and welcoming towards me. The jobs that I have had the opportunity to get involved with have been very enjoyable.
I feel quite valued at BAE Systems as often my work that I complete is commended by my Line Manager / Supervisor. In each placement I receive comments from my supervisor with regards to the objectives that I was set to complete. I will have regular meetings with my supervisor where we discuss my progress and how they think that I am doing.
The Advanced Apprenticeship Scheme has a very structured approach as it takes you from the 1st year of training, all the way through to the placements. Over the 4 year period we will also have regular (monthly) meetings with our Assessor to make sure that we are making good progress.
Support is always available when we need it. Our Assessors are always contactable during working hours and are happy to help. We also have regular meetings with them to ensure that we are making good progress. Problems can usually be resolved with your assessor, however, if necessary, they can be escalated to the Apprentice Manager who can help sort it out.
In all of my placements my Managers have been open to helping me wherever necessary. The HR team can be easily contacted from your workplace via phone. IT support can also be accessed using the internal phone service. Overall the employer is always happy to help in any situation which may arise.
The salary over the 4 years is progressive as you become more and more qualified. It is an adequate amount to meet most young peoples' living costs. There is also a slight increase in pay for travel, however this is only a minor amount. The pay at the end of the scheme is very good.
There are occasionally opportunities outside of work such as Award Evenings, or apprentice football matches. During the scheme there is also a chance to partake in a German Exchange.
