My current role is reviewing and writing code for the Eurofighter Typhoon. It involves speaking with the software team when reviewing code and meeting deadlines set for releasing new code to the customer. I am also responsible for the upkeep of Software metrics to be sent on to senior employees.
I have learnt several new skills. This includes how to communicate effectively as well as how to improve presentation skills. I have been on lean engineering courses and have learnt several new programming languages.
I very much enjoy my program. Team morale is very good and the work ethos/culture is very positive and encouraging. There is a lot of support in the business for apprentices.
I feel very valued. I am treated the same as an employee who has been working there for 20+ years and my views/ideas are respected and listened to. I am involved in exciting projects and given advanced tasks to test my skills and knowledge.
As I am on a relatively new apprenticeship scheme there are still a few bumps that require ironing out. This is in terms of performance based pay review criteria and funding for apprentice projects. In terms of training and support the structure is very good and very organised. I imagine as the programme matures it will improve to an excellent standard.
My academic tutors for University are very supportive, as is the mentor for software engineering within the business. If I have an issue it is usually dealt with on the same day as support is set up and given. The attitude to supporting me is very high as they want me to gain as much knowledge as possible.
I receive lots of support from my employer. My manager sits me down for regular updates to offer me support and advice. It is incredibly easy to get support on a task or help with an issue. The attitude to supporting apprentices is very, very good.
I live 5 miles down the road from work and live at home. The salary is more than adequate for my needs. In terms of daily costs it is sufficient. Alongside this any travel to sites further away is covered under expenses.
There are opportunities to get involved in sports teams. Alongside this there are nationwide company events which are held that apprentices can get involved and help with. There is the option to help and volunteer with supported charities by the company also.
Yes
As it really does set you up with a career for life. Everyone around you is very supportive and want you to achieve. The salary is very competitive and allows you to be independent both inside and outside of work. It is an exciting company to work for with exciting future projects to get involved with.
Make sure you d extra curricular activities that allow you to stand out from other people in the application process. Get involved in team working events and activities and try and take on some leadership roles to allow you to realise which role you are best suited to in a team and how you work most effectively.
