Apprentice Avionics Maintenance technician, my role is to assist in keeping aircraft within the Royal Air Force serviceable so that they can defend and protect our skies.
I have gained many qualifications that will support me in roles for the rest of my career, it has also benefitted me in that I have not had to pay for the qualifications and the experience came with the job title.
The programme is a very established that is structured around helping like minded individuals getting into engineering.
Working within BAE Systems you feel as part of a community. The company promote networking with others that work within the same company as well as others, such as RAF personnel, suppliers, international customers and so on.
As above it is a very structured program with great help and support from all directions. I've also noticed that the majority of colleagues are always willing to help assist if you have any issues at work, or with your qualifications
A lot of the support is internal so they are never more than a phone call away.
Through the apprenticeship we have 12 weekly reviews to ensure that we are on track and meeting targets set out in our training. The company invests a lot of money into training each individual so they want to ensure their apprentices are looked after and in a happy working environment.
During the first year we received free accommodation in a hotel, the second year is slightly more difficult as we have to find our own accommodation at our respective deployment locations. However it does get easier with incremental raises through the 2 year apprenticeship.
Infinite amounts. Aircraft are flown globally and all of them need maintenance to be flown as regularly as they are. With a qualification of this sorts the skills are easily transferrable across the board.
Yes
It's a very good opportunity to gain valuable skills and knowledge to cement a future career with in aerospace engineering, maintenance and support.
Know what projects the company is currently working on, have a keen interest on engineering with the interviewers, a lot of information is supplied in the interview details that will be sent to you if you are successful. Experience isn't necessary but can help towards getting an apprenticeship. The experience doesn't necessarily need to be aircraft related, any sort of real work experiences can be beneficial. Attending a taster day is also a good way to get info on different roles and possibilities, these are held all over the country and info would be available of these events on the BAE Systems website.
