Apprentice Substation Craftperson My daily actives vary when on site I learn to install and maintain a wide range of substation equipment working with a variety of more experienced colleges to gain practical knowledge. For my first year though 75% of time I spent at NG own training center In Nottinghamshire. This is spent in a combination of practical learning experience in their workshop and sat down class work.
I have done a Varity of course so far, including lots of personal development training health, first aid, hand skills and safety BESC. This is though a combination of outside training providers and internal.
I feel very much appreciated by national grid, they seem to look after their staff better than my pervious employers the company has very good health and safety culture that also encourages people to be honest about mistakes so that can easily be learned from. I enjoy my work every day and so far as exceeded my expectation. My only complaint would be there does seem to some disorganization in how our course has been structured,
I feel valued by the grid so far my line manger is pleasant to work with and easy to approach.
For the most part the course seems well organized but there has been a few hiccups that could have been easily avoided but overall I'm happy with the organization
This one is difficult is answer so far I haven't needed much support but I do feel the support from training providers has always been excellent with a positive attitude.
I haven't really had a major issues to test how supportive my employer is but I feel from what little support I have needed it has been excellent
All my travel expenses are covered and when at college they put us up Monday to Friday with full board, The wage package is excellent, Its above the national living wage is excellent especially for a first year aprentership
The location of the college is a bit cut off and lack transport to the outside world. Especially as we are not allowed to drive, but at college there is a fait bit of stuff on site to provide some entertainment
Yes
Excelent pay and great company to work for, Relaxed working environment but not to the point where is get nothing done.
Do lots of research into the company and its values, Read up on the area your looking to work in and know some basic information. Also learn about H&S and how risk assessment work. On interview day be open and inviting and talk to many people as possible, listen and learn but don't be afraid to give relevant opinions
