Working with a large variety of new and exciting technologies to solve problems using embedded electronics all over the business. Day to day is never really the same, but within the first year I have been in charge of whole projects, being given control of new project given to the team, and had many opportunities to meet people from all around the business and industry.
Yes, both soft and hard skills have been developed such as track training, digital electronics, computer programming, first aid, and many others.
I very much enjoy the programme. The team all treat me like a fully professional engineer and aren't afraid to give me a lot of responsibility. They are all very kind and friendly, and the company culture is very open to moving around, trying new things, and learning new skills.
Highly valued. I feel like I am an integral part of the team given how much responsibility and specialisation I have already undergone. I have been very well intergraded, and I feel like the whole team appreciates the efforts I put in.
Relatively well structured. There is a large amount of freedom to choose our placements based on what we are good at and what interests us, rather than there being a very rigid set of placements lined up already. I think this encourages networking and evolving my own skills as I feel required. I think therefore that whilst there is not as much organisation as some places, this is actually better way of doing things.
There is a large amount of material available on the intranet system, and many of the lectures are very informative. Some are not so great, but most of them are good. There I support in place for those who need it.
The team are always willing to help me whenever I need it, despite their busy schedules. There is also a large amount of resources available throughout the team and department.
Exceptionally well. Even for a London salary, there salary here is very good and very competitive to having a comfortable life in London.
There are many events which can be attended by TfL staff from professional events to leisure events. There are often conferences and talks, but also sports teams and games nights, so there is a very good culture of doing things outside of work. particularly in the new buildings, there are also many leisure places nearby, as well as swimming pools and gyms.
Yes
I have found through my experience at more than one apprenticeship that TfL really does treat you how you would want to be treated, more like a young professional who is also working towards a degree rather than "just an apprentice" who can be pushed around. Also, the opportunities in this industry are amazing here, there is so much to get involved with and discover, and in addition the salary is amazing!
Just show how keen and willing to learn you are! Skills and knowledge can be taught, so being a good team player and being willing to learn new skills is a lot more of what they look for.
