  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Structural/Outfit engineer. I am currently in the layouts department working on the ship model checking design rules and completing observation reports of any incidents which can be handed to draftsman to resolve the issue. I speak to many people understanding what new tasks I have each day and I always have something to keep me busy.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My first year I gained a HNC in Engineering Systems and am currently studying for a HNC in Mechanical Engineering. I have completed internal training for my specific job (health and safety, Foran training). I have learned loads of new skills I can apply to my job.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy being busy and always having something to do, I also enjoy a challenging job and discussing issues in part of a team to gain a final solution. Although I am an apprentice I want to complete jobs that are important and are required instead of pervious work which has been completed, this motivates me more.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BAE Systems?
  • Valued, all queries are answered and dealt with. I have been asked to complete external work helping kids with career choices etc. which shows I am recognised.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I feel valued and I feel my apprenticeship is well structured. College support is very good and lecturers are always around to help.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • If training is required it is more often than not there and available. Any issues are resolved quickly and support is always received

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • If support is required it is always available from any one in the business. Managers are very helpful with any questions you may have.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Very well, I feel my salary is adequate for my living style as I have a car and house bills to pay however have enough money for general living and weekend life

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Company events to help kids from school choose a career path are frequent. STEM opportunities are also available to go to school and complete projects (model ships etc)

  • Yes

  • Good company and structured apprenticeship everyone is there to help if needed.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Be confident and express yourself in the interview, no need to speak all the time however it is important you don't vanish into the background. Try complete the correct school subjects and achieve the correct marks required and put a lot of time and effort in the application for applying.
