i am a PMC (pipelines maintenance centre) apprentice on the gas at national gird. my day to day jobs can vary hugely from stopping the gas flow, monitoring and surveying the pipeline, to inspecting the pipelines all over the country with many different people.
I have learnt many skills as we do a huge variety of training courses in many areas including specific gas training, and also basic in house training such as first aid. we then also have the higher level qualifications such as HNC's and degrees. I have also gained a much wider range of practical skills and knowledge.
I massively enjoy my work as it provides huge variety of jobs, and a great chance to see the whole country as we work all over. I also enjoy working with my colleagues as I meet many people. its a great company to work for and surpassed my expectations.
I feel valued by my colleagues, however could feel more valued by my manager who isn't based at my depo and doesn't have a great amount of contact with me. however my situation is unique.
the program is very well structured with a weeks long induction and continuous training in all areas over the length of the apprenticeship. I have regular meetings with program coordinators along with constant support.
I receive a lot of support form the training provider in a variety of ways including regular emails and 12 weekly progress reviews.
I receive a lot of support form the training provider in a variety of ways including regular emails and 12 weekly progress reviews. my mentors have also provided me with a lot of support and guidance as well as help with any problems that have occurred.
the salary package at national grid is brilliant in comparison to other apprenticeships and meets my costs fine.
there are opportunities for those that want to to attend different events and open days for different things. there are also Christmas events which are good to attend. once a year we have a stand down day for the full department which is also good.
