  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Engineering Technician. When I finish my first year of college I will start day to day work in the actual business. My daily tasks will be vary depending on what department I go into. I will be expected to keep in touch with supervisors of different levels of responsibility. I will also be expected to go to meetings and sometimes chair the meeting.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt various new skills in the short time since I've started my apprenticeship such as TIG and MMA welding. Ive also learned how to use various parts of large machinery and how these machines make things such as pipefitting easier. I've also learned how to fit various types of electrical fittings such as bulbs and switches. I've also learned quite a lot of health and safety criteria since i started my apprenticeship.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have really enjoyed the apprenticeship so far. I like how we required to work in teams and groups for certain activities because the working atmosphere is good. I like the variety of opportunities that the programme presents. The apprenticeship has met my expectations because i feel like I have already learned a lot in a short time.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BAE Systems?
  • I constantly get feedback from my manager about my progress and feedback on where to improve. I get feedback from my training facility regularly about my progress and about my strengths and weaknesses. I am always given the opportunity to be involved in new projects and tasks. I also feel valued because i am given the chance to represent the company at events.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The induction was done over three days and it gave a good introduction to the company by introducing us to the top management team. The programme is structured well over the course of 4 years with the first year spent at college full time and then starting to work in the business. When we are finished the apprenticeship i feel this will help us settle into the business easily has i have already been working in it for some time.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive a lot of support from my training provider in regards to tutoring and advice on where to improve. If i have a problem i feel i can talk to someone about it and that the problem will be resolved. The staff at the training facility are very friendly and welcoming and always ask if we have any problems or issues

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive lots of support from my employer in regards to well being and advice. My training officer always keeps in touch to check how i am doing and if i have any problems or issues. I feel confident they will act on any issues or problems that i may bring up. They always ask if there is anything they can do to help.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary covers the cost of my living and travel expenses and it gives me enough to spend on social events like going out with friends. It also gives me enough money to put away some every month and save for the future. It also leaves extra money that i can spend on things like clothes and other luxuries.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are lots of opportunities outside of work such as events with local schools and apprenticeship shows. There are also opportunities to go away on outdoor activities on a team building capacity.

  • Yes

  • The business provides lots of opportunities to develop as person and gain a variety of new skills. You also have the chance to meet lots of new people.

  • Learn about what part of the company you are applying for and what they do on a daily basis.
