  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Maintaining and repairing assets on site. I am also on call 1 in every 4 weeks in case of an failures that effect the plant.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, throughout my apprenticeship I have obtained a HNC, Trailblazer & COMPEX, this is only naming a few.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • A lot of working away from home meaning a lot of unpaid travel time but all expenses are paid for, but when you consider what you get out of the apprenticeship scheme it is worth it.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by National Grid?
  • I feel like a valued member at the team on site, but sometimes I feel the academy do not see the workload of being on site.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship was not well set out, we did our COMPEX at the end of our second year, this should have been done nearer the end of the programme. There was also countless times i had flew down for courses and they hadn't actually been planned in.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The academy set out quarterly reviews to assess how you are doing but I feel this added more unwanted stress when coming up to deadlines at college. They could have been planned better to accommodate for this.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Support on site and from the academy during the past year has been nothing but exceptional, with COVID affecting our trailblazers, they have done there best to accommodate for our needs.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Very good wage for an apprentice, also great benefits (sharesave & pension scheme)

  • The team on site often organise activities outside of work, good for team bonding
