I'm currently studying at college full time earning a HNC in mechanical engineering and PEO so my average day is split between theoretical study and practical experience in the workshop working alongside my fellow apprentices. Some days there are also opportunities to go to different work places to see different areas of the business. I am looking forward to going into placements though where I will get industry experience and become familiar with the company.
I have developed a deeper knowledge and understanding of engineering principles. I have especially developed skills in practical areas using machinery I had previously never used for example using the CNC machines which I can now code and using solid cam to manufacture components. I am currently working towards my HNC having completed a number of assignments and exams.
I enjoy my program as it is a great way for me to get into the engineering industry without having to obtain a large debt as well as getting industry experience and a good reputation before going into a full engineering job at the end. I work well with my fellow apprentices and cannot wait to start placements.
I feel well valued by BAE given the investment in apprentices and large amount of apprenticeships there are available to train a new generation to build and maintain their products. Although I have not done anything towards the company yet, the people I have met appreciate us as the future workforce. As BAE have been doing apprenticeships for a long time, they are well versed in ensuring apprentices feel like they are a part of the company and that they are well supported.
The program is well organised with a solid idea of the layout of the 4 years for the apprenticeship. I know that this year I am competent my HNC before going onto my HND and level 4 NVQ. It would however be good to have some work experience during school holidays (e.g. half term) as it can be dull having whole days just for independent study.
I receive plenty of support from the technical college I study at. The lecturers all have years of experience in industry including a naval architect which is great for learning extra information as well as hearing their experiences. If extra help is needed for example preparation with an upcoming exam then they are happy to help so that you understand and are ready for the exam. There are also resources around the college such as computers for independent study and a workshop which is useful if projects need manufacturing.
Whilst at college we are somewhat separated from our employer. We are in contact with other apprentices as well as our manager who we can get in contact with if we need to. We have been able to use facilities on site such as the SDC which I did my practical electrical work for my PEO.
The salary is good in comparison to going to university where I would instead obtain a large debt as well as more than standard jobs (e.g. retail). As I live at home it is enough to meet my costs. The yearly increase is also good as we complete qualifications and gain more experience.
I am in my first year so there haven't been many as we're currently at college full time. We have taken part in a stem event for primary school children to encourage engineering as well as getting involved in an industry boat race. From talking with apprentices from higher years there are lots of opportunities available later on however.
Yes
I would recommend to a friend as it is a good way to get into the engineering industry. I enjoy seeing the different sites BAE has and the different areas they specialise in which has given me a good insight into future potential placements. I think it is better than going through university as I gain industry experience as I earn qualifications so I can already make an impression vector I apply for a full role at the end of my apprenticeship.
To have a drive for engineering and enjoy learning new things. Don't worry if you don't have loads of experience as they are looking for someone with potential not someone who knows everything already. Be yourself and show what you can offer and ensure you do some research into the company beforehand to show your interest.
