My job title is an engineering technician and I am currently in college. I am currently doing a HNC in engineering systems and an SVQ2. My daily tasks consist of learning and applying theory to solve problems in my HNC, and doing practical tasks such as welding and pipefitting in my SVQ2.
Throughout my apprenticeship so far I have definitely learned new practical skills, such as welding and wiring. As for developing existing skills and knowledge, subjects such as dynamics and statics have allowed me to further my knowledge in physics and engineering mathematics has allowed me to further my skills in maths.
I enjoy this program a lot. The work is challenging but manageable. The fellow apprentices are good people that I can rely on if needed. Since I am in college currently there has not been a lot of influence through company culture. This apprenticeship has definitely met my expectations so far and I look forward to progressing throughout it within the next 3 years.
I feel that apprentices are valued greatly by bae systems and we are always given the necessary support to see us through our apprenticeship. Our training officer regularly visits to make sure that we are having no problems and that anything that needs to be addressed is addressed. Overall I do feel valued.
My program is very well structured. The induction was short but not short enough to be an issue. College is as organised as it can be. The only disruptions I have faced would be due to lecturers being off sick. My only issue would be that I feel it would be beneficial to include a portfolio period as to complete logbooks for our SVQ.
Our training officer visits weekly to make sure that we have no issues and that we can address any issues that we do have. If there is an issue it can be resolved fairly easily with no fuss which is something I greatly appreciate. Overall I feel that I receive enough support to help us throughout our apprenticeship and that I can always address issues if needed.

My salary package meets my costs well and will allow me to further myself in the future. I find it greatly beneficial that it will increase as in the future I will have a lot more outgoings and overall it will meet all my needs and support me with living and travel costs.
Currently the only upcoming activity outside of work is the outward bound course in October. Other than that there are currently no opportunities outside of work which I feel is the right thing to do as it allows me to focus on my studies while in college. There may be more opportunities when I am in the workplace.
Yes
I believe that it is a much better option than going into further education such as university. I am learning lots of new skills and I am getting paid and there is more security that I will get a job at the end of my apprenticeship. University does not have such perks as my friends can attest to.
Use all the time given. Do not rush the three tests part of the application. Just answer what you can. When it comes to the presentation part of the process. Use all the time to come up with a good straightforward presentation. Practice it and make sure you are 100% ready, and that you have a plan on how to present it.
