Engineering Technician Apprenticeship. I am currently at college for my first year. I am doing a HNC in Engineering Systems and an SVQ Level 2. In addition to this we are also in the process of building a model midsection of a ship as part of our project. Our plan is to have spinning lights, an internally lit bridge and an operational crane.
I have learned how to TIG weld and am currently starting on the basics of MIG welding. I have also learned how to fit a consumer unit and how to wire lamps and sockets. I have been learning various different types of pipe fitting such as threaded steel pipe and copper pipe as well as welded steel pipe.
I enjoy learning lots of different skills that will help me in the future with my work. I like that we are learning practical skills that will help us gain an appreciation of how things are built and so will allow us to create better designs based on these things.
I feel that BAE puts lots of value on the apprenticeship scheme and the apprentices. The company pays the college to take us on for the year and checks in on us weekly. I think this shows that we are considered a valuable part of the company. I feel very valued.
I feel that the programme is very well structured. the first year is spent learning all the theory required for our job as well as gaining an appreciation for the different crafts that we will be creating designs for. he next few years will be spent rotating round the different disciplines and eventually specialising in one subject area.
our training provider meets with us on a weekly basis in order to check how we are getting on with our course and to see if we have any issues that he can help us with. he has a good general attitude towards us and always tries to help us whenever possible.

Since I do not have a car yet my travel costs are about 50 pounds every four weeks as I have to get the bus into the college. Most of my salary is going towards saving up for a car so that I will be able to drive to work once I am in the yard.
currently because we are in the college full time we have not had many experiences outside of the work place. I think that once I am in the yard I will have more opportunities to participate in company activities as well as volunteering initiatives and I look forward to doing so
Yes
I feel that the course is well organised and provides you with a very strong apprenticeship that offers lots of different opportunities. the company also provides the opportunity to put you through university on completion of the apprenticeship program. I think this is a very good opportunity and is hard to find with other companies.
I would tell them to do a lot of background research on the company and to keep up with current events so that they look well informed about the company during the interview process. I would tell tham to take plenty of time to prepare and to not leave it all to the last minute.
