My role is within the mainframe security team. Day to day work includes working on security projects, learning the environment, change management and resolving incidents which occur.
I have learnt how to work on a mainframe and all about the z/OS operating system. The whole environment was completely new to me however I have been thoroughly taught and am now fully capable using it. I will be attending 5 firebrand training courses which focus less on my day to day role and more on network security. At the end of the apprenticeship I will achieve a level 4 certificate as a Cyber Security Technologist
I thoroughly enjoy the apprenticeship that I am currently taking. The team made me feel welcome and I have learnt so much in such a small amount of time, I much prefer the hands on style of learning. The company treats apprentices fairly and I have had no complaints with the way I have been treated. Truly a great company to work for.
My manager greatly appreciates all the work I am doing, in our 1 to 1s we talk about the work I do and he tells me things I can improve on as well as things I am excelling at. I get involved with multiple projects and am never classed out because I am an apprentice.
Our induction was well put together however I didn't know my role until a few days before which was slightly annoying as it meant I couldn't do much preparation in advance. The training in the team is amazing, the training from firebrand is good but quite intensive, 4 12 hour days in some cases, I don't like this learning style however I do learn a lot on the courses. I have had to take an exam before having access to a revision resource which was rather annoying. The organisation on firebrands side isn't very good in my opinion but this isn't Lloyds' fault.
Whenever I need help I do ask the firebrand facilitator, however sometimes replies can take up to a few weeks. My facilitator is very friendly and I feel like I can approach him whenever. He always does his best to try and help however, sometimes I feel like there's is not a lot he can do as he has been told by firebrand to give a particular answer rather than his own.
Support to me from Lloyds has been brilliant, if ever I need time to work on the apprenticeship I will be given it. My line manager is a fond supporter of the apprenticeship and supports me thoroughly. Whenever I have any queries the team are always willing to help. Everyone takes in mind that I am a young apprentice so they are all more than happy to give up some of their time to help me.
Salary package is good, I live at home and my travel costs aren't overly expensive. I also have an apprentice oyster card which reduces the price of the travel card by 30% which is handy. Working in central London is ideal as it only takes me about 40-50 minutes to commute in every day.
There are plenty of events taking place outside of work, I have been to multiple team bonding events in different locations. Its good as it allows me to travel. Lloyds also gets involved in plenty of charity events.
Yes
I am treated incredibly well here. All my colleagues are always willing to help. The working environment is great agile working is also a plus as it allows you to work from home if required. Flexible hours also make things a lot easier.
Be keen in the subject that you want to get the job in. Be open to working well in a team. On the assessment day make sure you speak to all the other applicants and show that you are sociable. Try your best in the maths and English tests and do a bit revision beforehand. Take all the opportunities you get if you do get the job as they are invaluable.
