My job role is warehouse team manager which main tasks are supervising picking, intake and outload. Other daily interactions are generally report based including reporting performance in areas such as hours used in tasks and accuracy. Projects are then based off the back of these reports in the aim to improve productivity.
I have attended multiple events at head office and other places that were aimed as training days in things like leadership styles. I was also involved in a mentoring scheme in which a higher manager from another depot was there to support me and answer any questions I had. The apprenticeship company also set work that explored general practises in warehousing. Most of my learning has come through formal meetings discussing absence, discipline and accidents.
The work can be very tiring due to the fast pace of short life products coming in and out of the depot. The team I work with are all welcoming and knowledgeable and the company culture is based around involving and people focus. I enjoyed my apprenticeship.
All my managers have made me feel appreciated and have tried to give me as much opportunity to learn and develop. I do get thanks and recognition for my hard work and feel like a valued member of the team.
The induction was good to meet other apprentices and Gist kept this going with regular meetings where we would be taught new things as a group. First4Skills, the apprenticeship company, did assign work, but there was little interaction other than this.
A tutor was available to advise and support, but this was sometimes a delayed process.
Management and HR were all very supportive and willing to put time into my development
My salary covers the costs of my lifestyle, but I feel it could be slightly higher.
Most company events I attend are apprenticeship related. There are swimming pools and gyms in the local area which I have used in my spare time.
Yes
Gist is always looking to get the best from it's staff and to help those who want to go further.
Be ready to learn on the job, the most valuable lessons I have learnt are through experience.
