My Job role within the business is as an Aircraft Fitter. Currently I'm working on one of the most advanced multi-rolled fighter aircraft types in service. This can involve working with metallic materials as well as aircraft composite components. On a daily basis there are a variety of tasks to keep me busy. Operations can range from installing various types of fasteners to assembling larger more intricate sections of the aircraft.
While being with BAE systems I feel like I have learnt a vast number of new skills as well as improving those already acquired. Communication skills have vastly improved due to the number of presentations I take. Hand skills on a whole have improved due to the 'hands on' nature of the job. The further education side of the business allows me to expand my knowledge basis greatly. It has also allowed me to re- cover the academic side of work being out of school for longer than 5 years.
On a whole I greatly enjoy the apprenticeship programme. I have been lucky enough to work with a fantastic number of people at work who in turn have helped me grow and learn. BAE systems is currently meeting my standards and is evolving and growing within itself which is always reassuring to see.
As an apprentice I feel greatly valued. Appreciation as well as recognition is always felt from the manager and is often posted on the website. The only negative point from my point of view is that an apprentice can tell when moved on to a placement which is either new to having an apprentice or unable to sustain support for them, which in some cases with regards output for the business is understandable.
On paper and in theory I feel the programme is well organised and structured accordingly. In some smaller cases work in a particular area may not be best suited for an apprentice.
I received large amounts of support from all my tutors, managers and assessors.
I receive satisfactory amounts of support from managers and colleagues.
My wage only just meets my requirements, but this may be down to being older than the average apprentice. However, I don’t believe there is as much support in apprenticeships as there is down a university route.
BAE has a vast number of different events and opportunities to take part in, which have included: Award ceremonies, Aircraft and Technology shows, Business competitions, School and college trips, Charity events, Sports events and Outward bound courses.
