My role within Tulip is to shadow a Maintenance engineer throughout day to day activities and learn about the process of maintaining the machines and also how to approach and fix breakdown issues. I also learn how about doing PPM on machines, which is essential to ensure correct operation.
I have learnt lots of new skills while being on my apprenticeship. I have been trained In the following: first aider training, working at heights, scissor lift training, food and drinks safety level 2. I've also learnt lots of skills from shadowing engineers and through my mentor. Thing's such as electrical systems on machines and also the mechanical aspect.
I really enjoy the program I am on and enjoy coming to work to learn new things every day. I get along and work well with everyone in the factory but more specifically with the engineering team. I love that I can come to work and not quite know exactly what I will be faced with on the day.
I feel valued by Tulip and by the engineering team. Tulip holds an apprenticeship awards day where they award apprentices for their contribution within the company, which I attended and received and award for my part in making an apprentice video. I also receive feedback from the engineers, engineer supervisor, my manager and my mentor.
I find that my apprenticeship is structured well. The course I am on is a newly developed course so it's all new to everyone. I think the way the course works, runs great. Our college program is based on blocks away in college. We do 3 lots of 6 weeks blocks a year in college, then put into practice what we learnt in college back in work.
I receive lots of support from my training provider, my tutor and my course manager. At the end of each of the 6 week blocks we have a review where we talk about any issues that may have occurred. We also talk about how the modules we are undertaking are going and whether I need any extra support. I also have the emails and phone numbers of the relevant people such as my tutor and my course manager.
I receive lots of support when back in work from my employer. My manager and I have a meeting when I get back to the site to ensure that everything is ok. My mentor helps me on a day to day basis supporting me and teaching me how to do certain maintenance tasks within the factory. I have not had any problems but I feel that if I did have a problem there would be no issue raising my concerns and that I would be listened to.
My salary is really competitive for an apprentice who is on his second year. My salary far outlays the costs to me. When it comes to college all expenses are paid by the company such as hotel, breakfast, evening meal and travel expenses.
There are many opportunities outside of work. I have recently attended a apprenticeship event where I spoke to potential candidates who may be interested in engineering. I have attended a city and guild's apprenticeship ambassador event when they taught me how to present to people and how to speak to people about my experience as an apprentice. I have attended a awards ceremony hosted by Tulip where they award apprentices based on their performance though the year. All in all I have found that there are lots of opportunities to be had outside of work.
Yes
I feel that Tulip is a great place to work and they support their apprentices massively. I've found out personally that there are lots of opportunities within the company and once you are in a certain role, doesn't mean that it's your role for life.
Never feel that you cant apply for a certain role. Always aim high.
