I am a Data Analyst within the Global Data Economics team at Bloomberg. My job role has three main aspects: Sourcing and uploading data to the Bloomberg terminal; Analyzing data we already have through python and excel and answering client questions on the data. I have had many projects since i started from simple data cleanups to more complex tasks in python to provide automatically generated reports which are used for data rationalisation. I love it, it is extremely interesting and I am able to program which is my passion.
Of course, Bloomberg offer an internal university system where they provide free training to employees from other, more experienced employees. I have been able to attend every course on programming that i wanted, from Object Oriented programming in python, to data manipulation with the Pandas library.
The culture at Bloomberg is fantastic, everyone, literally everyone, is willing to help you if you have a problem. We have an internal real-time messaging service which makes it very easy to communicate with people and thus get the help you need or give feedback on something.
I feel I am making a difference, I do real projects which are actually used, everything i do has an impact on how my team works. We have weekly sprints in which we have to say what we plan to do over the next week, and I am always able to say something meaningful and work with the team effectively if there are any problems I feel I can help with. I am treated as an equal by all my colleagues.
Training from my training provider is poor, however, I have nothing but positivity for how Bloomberg has handled this and helped us gain all the support we need internally.
The training was very poorly structured, we have training every Tuesday. However, for the first couple of months we did not learn much. Our training provider was very poor at first, however, Bloomberg did their best to hold them accountable and help us where possible. This has improved a lot recently.
Bloomberg provides excellent support, I have a weekly meeting with my team leader to discuss how i am doing and raise any concerns. She is able to help me through how poor the training provider is and talk to HR about how they can improve it. So far, there has even been a Bloomberg led talk on one of our topics in software development to ensure we didnt fall behind due to the lack of support provided by out Training Provider.
The salary is well above average for my role. I have no living costs, my travel costs are expensive since i live far from zone 1. However everything else is fine. I am able to buy a fresh suit whenever i like aha.
Yes, my team and department as a whole are very social. Once a month we go to team drinks and other such events. Bloomberg offer to subsidise any out of work training we may want as long as we make a business case. Another example is that i have a free ticket to PyLondonium 2018 as it is held at Bloomberg this year and i made a good impression on the host!
