I am a 3rd Year Technical Apprentice. My job role is within Industrial Engineering for my company. I work on different tasks each day to do with new product introduction and help qualify products that we are delivering to customers. I work with integrated project teams being the bridge between manufacturing and design. I am complete on-site and off-site training.
I have gained the following qualifications so far: SVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations & HNC in Engineering Systems. Currently working towards an SVQ Level 3 in Technical Support and HND in Engineering Systems. I continue to carry out internal training as I am part of a knowledge transfer with my supervisor to ensure someone gains his area of expertise. Continuing to gain technical knowledge on the products my company makes.
I am really enjoying my apprenticeship programme as I have now secured a final placement within a department which I really enjoy and suits my skill set and desire to continue to learn. I work with people who are willing to answer my questions and support my personal development. The apprenticeship has improved my confidence massively as a person both in and out of working environment.
I have often received recognition both from the apprentice management team and other members of the company on the contributions I have made to the company. I have carried out many internal and external events which have received positive publicity both on social media and in the papers. I feel like a valued member of my apprenticeship scheme and department as I am given the opportunities to make a difference.
The organisation of the programme is ran very well. We have 6 months full time at college to allow us to gain general engineering knowledge in areas such as health and safety and basic machining. Then the programme is organised well throughout your time within the workplace and during day release to college with this all being monitored at quarterly reviews.
I feel that I receive adequate support from my training provided to that I am aware of the steps I need to take if I have any issues and I always feel that when I do have any issues they are more than happy to support and see that the issue is resolved in a timely manner.
My employer 100% supports me, both with my personal development needs and work related issues. I am always aware who the right person to contact is and they are more than happy to help when I have any issues. I have several business mentors who support me to ensuring I have a successful career.
With regards to an apprenticeship pay the salary we receive is very competitive. However, this pay does not reflect the living and travel costs associated with Edinburgh. Since we are based in the city centre living & social costs are high meaning many people have to move further away from the office hence increasing travel costs. The pay does not reflect the amount of financial impact apprentices have within the company with regards to output.
We often try to arrange apprentice nights out to allow us to socialise outside of work however this is purely down to the apprentice to organise and the management team will not arrange any form of events for us to take part in such a team building activities. I think this is something which could be changed and would be beneficial for the apprentice community.
Yes
I have found an apprenticeship the best option when leaving school as I have manage to gain several qualifications, industry experience and hands-on experience which I wouldn't of gained if I went to Uni to study. I am also getting a full time salary meaning im not getting into debt for studying.
Be yourself. Work as part of a team but also standout as an individual - confidence is key. Life experience is just as important as industry experience so link hobbies etc to skills which would be beneficial/desirable from an employers perspective. Apply for many different types of further education such as uni, college and apprenticeships so you have a choice when it comes to making a decision about your future.
