  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • as a technical apprentice I will be moving roles every 3 months into different placements. this allows for a broad insight into the company. I am in my first placement now I engage with other employees on a daily basis and am given a a clear view of how what I am doing is affecting the business. Leonardo will make sure you are given help throughout however give you a lot of responsibility.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • An SVQ at the end of the apprenticeship. at college I have achieved a PEO and am working toward a HNC in Engineering systems. general people skills is one of the main things I have developed as from the get go I was asked to speak to senior members of the company, sit in at meetings and make phone calls to other employees. computer skills are also improved as I have been taught how to use teamcenter and am more confident in word and excel. as I am new to the apprenticeship I can only comment on what I have done but so far I am learning new things every day.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am enjoying the programme very much. coming straight from school I wasn't sure what to think of the apprenticeship but I have settled in well. I have a good bunch of lads in the same process as me which helps a lot. the company is a good company to work for in many ways.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Leonardo?
  • so far I feel fairly well valued however I spent my first 6 months at college full time so I wasn't involved in the business much which is understandable. in my first placement I have felt valued and been given plenty of meaningful work which makes me feel valued and responsible for it

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • the induction was okay, the first one was a bit boring but just brief as we went to college for 6 months. the organisation was average at the college. however the company supported us well with meetings and briefings of what the company was up to. the programme itself is organised well with the 3 month placements as if you don't feel like your placement is for you it is only 3 months

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • we have meetings with the apprentice managers every 3 months to make sure we are keeping up and to ask of any concerns. this is helpful, there are also monthly apprentice meetings to discuss anything else. if I am ever in need of assistance I am able to ask one of the apprentice management team and they will help in any way they can.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • living costs are fairly manageable for me as I don't own my own house, travel costs are not too bad as I am a half an hour drive from work. the cost of food at the canteen can be a bit steep at times so I would recommend bringing your own as you will save a lot. if you are smart with your money, the wage is more than capable of stretching to a very sociable lifestyle.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • volunteering is a massive part of the Leonardo apprenticeship. we are all registered as STEM ambassadors and help with he STEM volunteering at schools and other events. there are also many company out of work activities like Christmas nights out and fundraisers like quiz nights. with the apprenticeship there are many add ons you can use such as free Edinburgh leisure gyms

  • 9. Would you recommend Leonardo to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • the company is a very good gateway to the future as most employees here have been in the job for many years, if you are looking for a job for life this is the place to be. also you are being payed to work and also to gain your qualifications and being put through college.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Leonardo?
  • it is not all about the qualifications you have. if you make the assessment centre remember that everyone is in the same situation as you and its okay to be nervous. you don't have to come across as the most confident person but have to show that you are willing to work hard and with that your confidence will definitely grow. the interview is not as bad as you think but make sure you research the company before interview, they want to know if you know the business first. make sure you tell them of any outside activities you have done or charity events in the application
