I am a technical apprentice at Leonardo MW. On a day to day basis I complete tasks depending on which function of the business I am working in at the time. I speak to my manager at the start of the day to clarify what I will do during the day. Usually I have an on going project that I can get on with.
yes I have learnt new skills at college on my level 3 BTEC course on things like mechanical principles, metal work and analytical methods. Although the teaching at my college is hit and miss and sometimes the teachers cant get the lessons across. I learn a variety of skills at work like how to structure different types of work. Also I have learnt how to use different types on equipment in an engineering environment.
I do enjoy the work environment and the conditions set at work. When going into a new team I feel very welcomed. It did meet my expectations as everyone at work is helpful and understanding. At college I do not enjoy my time as teachers are not friendly and are not there to give you full support and help that I need.
I feel appreciated a work from my managers as they tell you when you do good work and tell you how it benefits the business. I don't think internally the work we do is valued by the employees in our company. I feel valued when completing tasks and projects. I feel our work could be more recognised by all employees at Leonardo.
College is very unorganised. We could have more of a clear plan of the work we will be doing when going into a placement and have the teams roles clearly stated.
I receive a lot of support from all my managers at work when I need it. More support on where my career is going would be helpful and how to get a job at the end of the apprenticeship. More classes and awareness sessions could be put on to help us with things like NVQ and how to try and get a job at the end of our apprenticeship.
We get support where needed. Have not been provided a mentor within the business. have been responsive when bringing up problems and help needed.
Not well. Compared to similar companies with the same level apprenticeship, qualifications and course structure. It has not risen with the rate of inflation at all. Our course doesn't pay for parking at college or the travel to and from college. Graduates at the company are given a budget to spend on addition training etc. we are given none. It is impossible to pay for accommodation, travel and survive on the wage we are given if having to be independently with the rate inflation on the economy.
Yes they provide company events outside of work which we can take part in including sports and social clubs. Also have company events that we have been invited to as apprentices.
No
I think the course is set out well and gives us a good opportunity. But college is not as helpful as they should be. And there are rival companies offering the same hours and opportunities for a lot more money. If the pay was increased I would then recommend the apprenticeship to a friend.
Show you interest in what ever line of business you want to go into. Show you have innovation and tell the business what you could offer them. Tell them what experience/qualification that you have which have relevance to the business. Show them that you are interested and have looked into what Leonardo do as a company.
