my current placement is in the machine shop, and the jobs I am faced with can vary on a daily basis. Recently I've been using the lathe and milling machine to manufacture things like support pillars and captive screws. there is also a lot of manual fitting jobs like assemblies
I picked up a lot of basic skills at college throughout my PEO, and this helped me to understand more when I started back at the company. in the first few weeks back I was invited to many awareness sessions delivered by different areas in Leonardo. from using the machines and tools in the work shop regularly I have picked up the basics
I enjoy working at Leonardo and in the machine shop, mainly because it feels like the morale on site is always high because all employees are helpful and friendly. in the inductions you spend all your time with fellow apprenticeships giving you many opportunities to socialise.
because the machine shop is so busy with work at the moment Jock my manager puts a lot of responsibility in me to complete jobs correctly so I feel very valued. took part in the Leonardo challenge event as well and helped supervise the children on site.
the induction ran smoothly and everything was structured well. despite this there was some confusion with my placement chart and we were unsure where I was supposed to be going first. but it all was sorted reasonably quick
college provided more than enough support with completing the course work and lecturers were always there to offer a helping hand
all employees on site are always willing to help you out. everyone knows that you are new and wants to support you to make the job as pleasant as possible.
the salary is good for a young person like myself, and provides more than enough for fuel and other living costs.
Lots of events on going that we are given the opportunity to take part in. company is always looking for apprentices to attend these kind of events.
