My job title is craft apprentice. Currently in the laser department my daily tasks involve shadowing other engineers and completing small tasks on my own whilst being monitored so that the job is done correctly. I must take responsibility for the work I complete however it must be approved by a qualified engineer first.
I am currently completing an SVQ level 2 in engineering systems at Edinburgh college at the Midlothian campus. I have also completed a PEO level 3 at the college prior to this. Within the company I have undertaken a number of different awareness sessions so that I fully understand the company and what is done.
I feel the work on site is enjoyable when the work is there which in some cases it isn't always there. Also working along side other qualified engineers is enjoyable as I can learn a lot from them and their experiences. I do not like the college aspect as I feel a lot of the work done in college is irrelevant to what is done on site.
As an apprentice I feel somewhat valued but I feel more could be done to accommodate us on site. For example, ensuring we have adequate time to complete SVQ work as this has to be done on site. Apart from that I feel that when I have done a good job or such things it goes a long way with management and supervisors alike.
I feel the program could be better structured in terms of placements as some people have been moved or their plans changed and I feel this could be thought out better. I feel, should we need it, we should be allocated time to study for college or to work on our SVQ qualification.
When needed I do receive a good amount of support. if a sit down meeting is needed to discuss an on going issue at home or on site or even if you need someone to talk too. They also give you advice or someone more qualified to speak too if they cannot answer any questions or things that you have.

I feel due to the rise in the cost of living i.e. rent, mortgage, council tax, gas, electricity etc. that our pay could be improved as a lot of us that have all these things to pay for, not including cars and other amenities that we are left with very little to save or things.
The company has many partners and when an opportunity comes up to volunteer we are pushed to do so as it looks very good within the company as well as outwith it. The company also urges apprentices to organise social events, for example, paintballing, go karting etc.
Yes
It is a good place to work and gives you a lot of opportunities and provides you a stepping stone into working life. It can also be considered a job for life in some cases.
Stay calm and focus on what you have to do. if you are not successful do not give up and keep trying.
